Age of Empires was good, Age of Empires II: Age of Kings was better, Age of Empires Gold, including the Conquerors expansion is unanimously recognised as the cream of the crop. With the gold edition you've got access to almost 20 different civilisations each with their own special buildings and units and special balancing reflecting the civilisations themselves. You'll be mining resources, taking care of diplomacy and conquering the masses, following the path to being call "My Lord"...
