What if reality was just an illusion?

Gray Matter is the first adventure game by renowned author Jane Jensen since the release of Gabriel Knight 3: the story mixes eerie goings-on with supernatural events in best Jensen-style. Neurobiologist Dr. David Styles is one of the game's central characters: since losing his wife in a horrible accident some several years ago, he has become a recluse, seldom leaving Dread Hill House, his English country estate.

One day student and street artist Samantha Everett shows up on his door step unexpectedly, at a time Styles just happens to look for a new assistant. Sam gets the job. Hailing from America, she has been travelling through most of Europe the last couple years. Her first task: finding six test subjects at Oxford University for one of Styles' experiments. The experiment starts off innocently enough, but then inexplicable incidents start mounting. And Styles is visited by his dear departed wife. Now it's up to Sam and Dr. Styles to solve the mysteries of Dread Hill House.

Like Gabriel Knight 3, you alternate between controlling two characters in the drama. Unlike Gabriel Knight 3, there's no timed werewolf dash at the end. Overall I enjoyed the game. I thought the use of stage magic was a new and interesting mechanic. The status screen doesn't make it clear what your next steps are. I would have preferred a classic journal listing in general form your next steps. This is especially important because in many cases you can't progress to the next stage until you activate the correct trigger. Finding the trigger isn't always a logical act (why do I need to go outside the house before the cook goes to wake me up?), so you spend a fair amount of time revisiting locales and reclicking hotspots until the cutscene starts.
