YES for Tray Client

I Think the tray Client would be a good idea, when launching games from your desktop you will be able to use less bandwidth of game tap servers because you don't have to load a web page and browser each time.

Unfortunately, I don't think we've heard any admin news about this in about 7 months. So who knows what the actual status of this is, or if it's even going to happen at all.

Returning user that doesn't like playing games on my browser.

I'd like the tray client very much.

Thank you.

Please add a tray client!! I understand you guys want to roll with the industry changes and implement ever changing technology, but the browser client is harder to use, buggy and not very well organized. So am I begging you guys to make a tray client, I am sure your original fan base and new subscribers would thank you.

Yeah this really sounds like a good idea, but the fact that you have to get support for it before you do it is really kinda sad. :( Trying to make something more useful and easier should be something that u just do with out feedback, but I like the fact that u do check with us before "messing with the site?" Any way all in all good idead go for it.

I agree with you on most of this, although it's been 3 years since this thread started, not one :P

What calendar are you using? I started this thread just under a year ago.

This is not necessary. Why do you want this? There are so many things that need fixing, how would this make the experience any better?

Well, for one thing it would hopefully mean I don't have to re-start my computer every time I want to switch to a new game. ...and YES I close "gametapplayer" in the task manager, but I still can't play a new game until I reboot my computer, which, frankly, sucks. Not to mention having to run ff in admin mode every time... I'm not complaining, It'd just be cooler if I didn't have to do all that.

What is the tray client, anyways? Is it a small, standalone application? Or is it just a browser plugin/add-on?

If the tray client is their reason for not fixing the browser implementation, I will forgive them. That is, if the tray client solves the stability issues.

It's in this thread, but took a while for me to find.
Here's what it was intended to do when it was announced.

Ok, you guys win. The system tray project has been approved, and we are currently estimating that it should be available in early 2010.

The GT tray app will include:
- desktop startup / login screen so you can bypass the browser
- download queue that you can manage
- quick launch list for "ready to play" games
- emulated game display in a dedicated window (no browser needed)
- lots of customizable user options
- easier ways to shutdown gametap / post logs / get support

And we won't be breaking any of the web stuff for those of you that like it.

We are pretty excited. Once we get this done, look for us to add all sorts of delicious features to it :)

Post Re: GT Tray Client
I might as well add my voice to this. A standalone tray client would be much appreciated. I hate having to run my browser in admin mode and run another browser in a VM whenever I want to download a game and look at any other web page at the same time. I realize the place practically changed management again when the Atlanta office closed, but the project was already green-lighted from management before the switch, so it shouldn't be too hard to get it approved once more if necessary.

Another (large) benefit would be that Gametap would not need to update the plugin to maintain compatibility with newer versions of browsers. Also, people who use other browsers (Chrome, Opera, etc.) who don't want to use IE or install Firefox just to play a game would be satisfied.

Edit:
This topic is not lacking for support; it has over 12,000 views. I just noticed this thread which says there is an update coming in April or May which will allow compatibility with Opera and Chrome, among other things. I would still prefer a separate client (in the tray or otherwise), but this is a step in the right direction. If it's confirmed that the update is coming, it may be a good idea to publicize this update more.
