Guys I'm all for defending Gametap but this is the I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread so let the guy vent. No it won't make any differance but neither will engaging him in a flame war. As long as he doesn't spam the forum let him say want he wants.

Okay, if they can't bring it back then tell me, WHY NOT?!?!? That's the answer I'm looking for

The old player is gone because GT is now owned by a European company called Metaboli. In the days of the old player, GT was owned by Turner Broadcasting. Metaboli uses a web based client, so GT had to conform to their way of doing things. The only way, and I mean the ONLY way the old player could come back would be if Metaboli were to sell GT back to Turner. And that ain't gonna happen! So, as samurai said, you'll just have to deal with it.

They absolutely CAN bring it back, because when they bought out GT, that included the framework powering the entire business at the time; hence why it lingered after the buyout. That said, they're not going to bring anything back. It comes down to a business strategy that Metaboli chose, and plans to follow through with regardless of the collateral damage. I've stated plenty of reasons why the previous UX was better, and all I've received from opponents are subtle agreements followed by a quick burst from the flame thrower. I'd seriously LOVE for anyone to layout some bullet points as to why the current UX is better for the customer than a runtime client. If it's a "more games" argument, I wonder if the library expansion rate supports it, I'd love to see those numbers compared to the previous growth rate. Here are a few problem points I've mentioned before:

- XBOX 360 controller no longer works with UI navigation and scarcely works for games
- No more platform independence (apparently anyone and everyone can build an iPhone app, but GT can't use the "universal" browser to reach out to our apple friends)
- It takes longer to browse through the library because of the additional steps and slower load time
- May be me, but downloads seem to take quite a bit longer
- Ads galore, in the client they were much more contextual and controllable to a degree

Perhaps the system tray tool will fix these; one can only hope. I'm not flaming or spamming, just looking for my counterparts to address the points.

I miss the old browser as well. It just worked, much like Steam. In my experience with three computers is that the web browser has been way too buggy and frustrating to use. It's just to the point where I'm just going to look elsewhere. :x

Brokenidol, I've noticed that too, especially when compared to Steam or even the DRM-riddled EA Download Manager. Of course that's if I can get the games to start downloading in the first place on Gametap.

*sigh* I just pray GT gets bought out by someone who might have a better idea of a browser than Metaboli *shudder*

well if your computer keeps getting errors buy a new computer simple as that, and relax man gametap is still cool besides i'm sure they'll hook up the ctstom control thing real soon and bring some more arcade games, so just take a chill pill man its all good.

^You do realize the time and effort it takes to self-build a computer right? It took me like 3 months and about 3 grand to make mine.

For the cost of a new PC, a person could buy a massive library of games that would work on the current machine.

You're right, I don't "know" it for a fact, but I don't think it's reasonable to build a brand new machine just to play GameTap when you're experiencing poor download speeds and compatibility errors? What I'm saying is to take the (optimistically) $1000 and buy actual media of your favorite games. If your favorite games don't work on your current machine, then evaluate the opportunity cost.

Post Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
This thread is awesome. I am just *so* motivated right now.

If you want some *real* reasons why the old Turner player will *never* come back in its original form, I will be glad to give some to you:
- As several have already said, Metaboli has always used players with web front ends. Like it or not, that's just how they roll. They have already been in the game business longer than Turner ever was, so let's not just write them off as idiots. The bottom line is that their gaming business model lasted longer than Turner's, and history is written by those that survive.
- The old player used at least three commercial software products that Metaboli did not have a license for. People forget that Turner is a huge company and has corporate licenses and run-time distribution agreements for about every single software package under the sun. Metaboli does not have this luxury, so they would have needed to spend some significant money to legally distribute the old player.
- The old player had a team of 10-15 full time software developers working on it the entire time GameTap was at Turner. The complexity of maintaining a chat system, a 3D UI, a netplay system, multiple game encryption technologies, embedded flash ads, and streaming videos took a lot of resources. Metaboli did not have nearly enough software developers to support that feature set.

I do think the system tray will alleviate some of these frustrations as soon as it is available. As you guys know, we are already working on it and I for one am pretty excited about the potential for having a browser free experience when I play my games. You will still need to use the browser to search and find new games, but once you've dropped them into your download queue you can shut the browser down and just launch everything with our neat little tray app. Life will be good again...

Honestly I think the combination of a simple tray downloader/launcher coupled with the browser for game discovery and search is really taking advantage of the best of both worlds. The browser is better suited to show you all the trailers, pictures, and game info in a myriad of flexible formats. This was always a struggle with the old Turner player.

So there you have it. Continue to vent, continue to complain, get it out of your system. But let's not have any more ridiculous assertions that Metaboli should "simply" turn the old player back on. It just ain't gonna happen.

If you can't get over the fact that the old player is gone, then *please* go take up a hobby. I recommend software development. Go develop your own game player exactly how you want it. Make a perfect one, then sell it to all of us. I will be glad to be one of your first customers if you can build anything remotely as cool as we did back at Turner :)
