Has a petition been started? Some one needs to make one if there hasn't been...
C'mon GameTap, why'd you switch? I'm pretty sure GT has been having financial problems.... now it's just gonna get worse, now that they have this interface.
4-5 hours to download HM: BM, along with many points where it just came to a stalemate, where it said it was about 100000000GB large, and where it tried to launch itself when I didn't even click "Play".
Please, fix this now. Why, on God's name would they scrap the player? Having both would be fine, since this is all a beta, but JUST having a beta, is just plain stupid.
This *** sucks.
(There, GT, I saved you some work by *** censoring the *** message so you don't *** have to. ***!!

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
Given the 64-bit support thing I haven't even tried the new method yet, but I liked the player, and have zero interest in installing a plug-in in my browser. If I ever use it, I guess I'll try installing it in a browser I don't actually use (something other than Firefox).
Honestly had I known about the switch, I probably wouldn't have signed up for a year. (Still haven't been able to use it of course because of the 64-bit issue.)

I would prefer the ability to use either. That way, I could play things like Metal Slug without any trouble from a browser, but I'd be able to play other things by launching them from a less-buggy desktop launcher.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
Honestly, i cant see the big deal or the issues, i haven't had a single problem yet, the games all download and play just fire for me, the site isn't laggy for me or anything. And the site isn't that hard to figure out unless your mildly reta...nm, anyhow just saying, so theres an ad or two whoopitydoo. Just cause you don't like something isn't a good reason to ran and rave unless its giving ya real trouble(which shouldn't be that hard to fix). Just take a min to learn the thing and deal with what issues instead of immediately jumping on forums to complain.....jus' sayin'

I am having problems too but ive been with gametap for about 2 years and i understand that sometimes things need to be done. So if we all just wait and give feed back, everything will be fine. and i agree, you must be retarded to not be able to figure out where the games are on this browser. its not that hard people!

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
All of the replies on this thread cover what i'm feeling. This new player is terrible and I feel I'm being cheated. i don't care what games are in the library if I'm unable to play them or if it takes a whole day of troubleshooting to get them to dowload only to have to do it again.
Short of drastic changes, I will not be renewing. As it is now, I feel i should be refunded whatever time is left on my account: this is not the service I paid for. I'm sure there is some fine print somewhere that says this IS the service i paid for, so I'm not pushing that.
My money could be better spent just buying a retail game once a year. At least I'd be able to play it.

I totally agree. I cancelled a while ago. Then, I bought a retail version of Homeworld 2 for less than $20, since it never worked for me through GT and I was told it's my PC that was the issue. Guess what? HW2 works perfectly for me now that I'm not trying to play it through GT. I also bought Midway Arcade Classics compilation, a Sega classics collection, NAMCO Museum Vol 1, and Activision Anthology for my PS2 for $25 (not including shipping). I'm very very glad I did, this way I don't have to wait a few more months for full-screen play, or keep my fingers crossed that anyone will ever get the licensing back for Robotron 2084 and the other Midway awesomeness that had to go. Gauntlet and Smash TV are really the icing on the cake. PS - the 80's soundtrack for the Activision Anthology is awesome.

Just came back after a few months being away and what the holy %@#$ do I see? But a buggy and BETA version of a browser based Gametap?? If it hasn't been called yet, I call it: Gametap WILL be out of business within a year unless they do something to bring back the non browser based system. Glad I didn't renew my account before I left, cause I won't be renewing it unless things change.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
I got a free 6-month Premium subscription through CokeRewards. After installing Gametap, I was extremely impressed with the service! Easy to navigate, quick to respond, and best of all, my 6-year-old and 4-year-old sons could easily access the games they wanted to play. When my free subscription ran out, I was planning on buying the yearly subscription.
Enter the new interface... and exit the functionality I had enjoyed.
The Web interface is incredibly slow loading up my list of games, sometimes taking more than a minute from double-click to the point it is ready to accept input - and that's even before choosing the game, waiting on THAT page to load, and launching the game! I've got a 5 Meg broadband connection to a Core 2 Duo PC with 4 Megs of memory... that kind of performance is unacceptable.
It's impossible to browse new titles with anywhere close to the speed of the old player... thus, I find myself simply not installing anything new anymore. Worst of all, my sons can no longer manage the interface without my constant assistance.
I know I'm just a speck of sand on the beach of discontent, but if I say nothing, nobody from the company knows I'm unhappy with the service.
Sorry, Gametap, I no longer see the value in the service anymore. When my subscription runs out, there's no compelling reason for me to start a paid subscription. And that's unfortunate... because I was hooked and ready to pay before the switch. You had me.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
It looks like I picked the worst time possible to join Gametap. Granted, I only signed up for the free version, but I was excited to play Hitman! I'm not too thrilled about the way this setup works, I've downloaded all 3gbs twice and still can't play the thing.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
While I'm not yet on the verge of canceling, I wanted to voice my support for the old player.
Mostly because I loved that I was able to load up the player, then minimize it while it works on a download. It's inconvenient at the least to have to log into gametap.com, then go to the 'My Games' page.
I'm also irritated that the 'priority' system doesn't seem to work properly on that page. It starts downloading whatever game is at the top. If I stop the download, re-prioritize the list, then tell it to start, it resumes the game that it was originally downloading, NOT the one that I want it to tackle first. This is especially annoying when it's 40% of the way through Supreme Commander (10gb) and is insisting that it will finish that before it downloads something like Unreal Tournament, that I'd love to play while I'm waiting for SC to finish. The Download on/off buttons have literally no function on my Vista 32bit machine, both in FF and IE 8.
I also miss the 'add the queue' button the player used to have. Maybe that's a feature I can enable somewhere else, but it's highly annoying that choosing to download another game interrupts the one I'm currently getting.
I have had minimal problems launching some games from the player, but they've been small and easy to resolve.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
I've been a member for 3 years (although I've only been a member on the forums for 2 years). The original GameTap client was so easy to use, my kids could navigate it.
When the new web-based client came in March this year, GameTap became unusable - both for my kids and myself. So, I left it alone for a few months.
Then, last night, I decided to see if things improved. Some things have: there's now parental controls and subaccounts; desktop icons are no longer created each time I play a game; downloading has improved. Some things I had to work around: needed to play with registry to point to alternate game drive; manual creation of desktop shortcuts to use IE8 instead of Chrome (my default browser). And some things are still broken: all my previous saved game information was lost; need to re-download games with the new client even though the game data from the old client is still present; game list cannot be re-ordered (e.g. putting desktop games at the top instead of downloading games); cannot play arcade games in full screen mode.
The jury's still out as to whether I'll cancel.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
Ok so I sent a message to GT literally at LEAST 2-3 weeks ago, complaining about the errors with my games that would COMPLETELY not let me play ANY GAMES. They have JUST NOW replied to it with a thread of technical support facts I already read and TOLD them it didn't work.
Game Tap, I have quit your services. You have not only failed me, but Hundreds of other customers. Good Day.
P.S. GAMETAP = EPIC FAIL XD LAWLTASTIC

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
Wanted to add in my .02$ as well.
I just came back to gametap to find that there isn't a client anymore. I'm REALLLLLY unhappy by this since the old client made it more appealing to search games.
The download speed is much much much slower now. 100kbs now vs. 800kbs before.
If any of the games I used to play fine on the client give me a hard time now - I will not be renewing for another month of service.
GIVE THE CUSTOMER THE CHOICE! HOW HAS IT NOT BECOME APPARENT THAT SOME OF US DONT LIKE THE NEW SYSTEM. GIVE US THE CHOICE.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
Hey! No need to get angry about the web player! It's getting better as you read this! They're patching it up right now,and I will admit,on the first day of converting,I was whining *cough* like the rest of you. Now,it's still running slow, but working on my games. Eventually, hopefully, this might soon be almost as good as the original player! So,just be patient, take your time, and if you've got no patience, unsubscribe (unless you have a yearly ) and come back when it gets better. Okay?

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
Damn 33 pages of complaints, and we were only forced to go to browser form... hell i dont know less than a year ago. Now when I download a new game I run the risk of getting angry and chucking my laptop out the window. I've downloaded a total of 5 games since the switch, and 3 times I needed to contact support so I lost about a month and a half trying to get games to work, maybe they are trying to get us all to read a book, play outside or I dunno smoke crack. 1 of the game never worked no matter what I did. I feel cheated because I paid for 12 months of gametap service, but for almost 2 month I had to find something else to do because the games I wanted did not work. Also I feel stupid because once I found gametap I told all of my friends, and I even told some random person because I was so happy that I did not need to spend a fortune on gaming (I bore easily). And now they all want me to give them the $60 back (jokingly I think) for introducing them to gametap. I just do not like paying $60 bucks for a head ach, and hopefully if we get enough complaints they will switch back, you know like New Coke tasting awful, then selling Old Coke for a higher profit, maybe that is why they are doing this.

I Completely agree. This new site really sucks. I have been having trouble ever since we started with this and i have been a valued customer for two years. I really think they should refund our money. Either that or they should let us use the old player until all the glitches are fixed.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
I just canceled my subscription, and my account profile is still "Migrating billing information". Which I find amusing, cause it probably means Metaboli has no idea how much money they are actually losing yet from the purchase of Gametap from Time Warner.
For those who "don't get why you guys are complaining":
1) Navigation isn't difficult, it's slow. And I'm sorry, but we live in 2009. I have a fios connection, 8 gigs of ram, and a quad core. No amount of power however, will help a poorly scripted plug-in load faster on my browser. The old app software was instant gratification in terms of browsing, categorization, and user-friendliness.
2) Things will only get worse. Gametap has lost over half its clients since the change. Metaboli as a company is cutting its losses. I think the lack of any significant response to the massive customer feedback is evidence enough. It doesn't take 3 months to make the progress they've made with the app thus far. The company has not allocated the man power and resources to make gametap profitable.
I'm pretty bummed about this cause I loved gametap for a long time. But the new app is too difficult to get past to make any of the games worth playing. Gametap was supposed to be a quick fix from my mainstream videogame entertainment. I want to be able to download an 80s classic in 3 minutes, and play it without any real problems. While I can still do that, it's not the same instant experience it once was. The new interface is just that bad.

Re: I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
Its saturday night, 9 pm. I look at the top of the screen where it says "Players online 926." Then I remember the old Gametap usually had players online in the tens of thousands. Smooth.
Then I look at the bottom of this thread where it says "Number of Posts: 833", and I realize: There are almost as many people complaining about the new service as there are begrudgingly using the new service.
Even a corporate moron would realize the total screw up GT would become. It seems Metaboli is run by corporate retards, who fail to make this logical conclusion.
If I was still being charged money for this I would cancel.

I would love to know where you got those numbers, considering Gametap never published the number of players online prior to the Metaboli merger, and even since then the most I ever saw it at at one time was around 1100ish. (Well, except for that one time the counter broke, but that's another story.) crono141 wrote: Then I look at the bottom of this thread where it says "Number of Posts: 833", and I realize: There are almost as many people complaining about the new service as there are begrudgingly using the new service. | | |
There hasn't even been one post per person in this thread, and a significant portion have been replies from mods like myself and staffers. Your number there is a bit inflated, as a result.

More people want a client than want 64bit, according to this thread size. Pretty amazing that months later, people still haven't forgotten how far the service on here has fallen under your watch. Good job guys/gals lol..
I won't be renewing, either.
