and using the new interface?
I was under the assumption that we would be able to use either.
I prefer the "Player", is this temporary?

It was quite clear that the Gametap client is being retired. We won't have a choice to go back. Ever.

Weird, is there any specific reason why?
I can understand not spending time and resources supporting the Mac OS platform, but the GameTap Player??
You guys do know that Web Browers are not built for playing games, right?

Money for support and development was my understanding.

How is it LESS money to reinvent the wheel?
The Player was already functional and it's own "self-contained" program that could be updated as needed.
Forcing everything to the Browser isn't "easier" to develop for, and Browsers are constently upgraded as well, which could cause something in Gametap to break... causing unforseen updates and fixes needing to be programmed.
It just seems like backwards thinking.

Needs to work in the first place before it can break. Sorry, I'm just a little bitter.

they were working on both the player and website before so cutting the player is half the work/money.

Ok, but Gametap apparently openly admits that this thing isn't even READY. Quote: Website Beta Release Notes As you may have noticed our new site isn't quite ready for prime-time and has earned itself a beta tag. What does this mean for you, the user?
Some site features may not function as expected or intended. Be sure to check out the release notes for known issues and common problems. Rest assured that we are working as fast as we can to get these issues resolved.
Why was this even rolled out yet, other than pressure because of the "Please wait while we UPDATE our site" that's been in place over the last few weeks?

No-one except the gametap people know for sure, but the common belief is they were forced into it by metaboli (which also uses a web based system very similar to the new gametap). Why would metaboli force them from using a perfectaly good player into a terrible web interface? I don't know. I know I for one hate the change, even if everything worked perfect which is does not. Cutting half the features and forcing your customers to beta test an obviously broken new system = bad idea.

Re: So, we dont have a choice between the "Player"...
I am not happy at all. They wanted a browser based system, fine. But why kill the old one that worked so well? Why am I forced to use a system that I honestly would never have signed up for? So many features have been lost that somebody somewhere should have put a stop to this. It makes zero sense. none.

To be fair you never had to see them before since you didn't play on the website.

It's a double-edged sword in regard to ads. Free users no longer have to wait 15 or 30 seconds to play a game.

Which is nice for all the people who don't pay gametap anything, and bad for paying customers. Generally it's a smart idea to do things the other way around.

i can understand the ads. when the site is working fine the ads should keep the cost down for us consumers. hopefully anyway.

I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread
The thing I liked most about Gametap was it's ease of use. It was so easy my kids could use it. Now you've taken away our player and insisted that we play Gametap from a browser. No fair!
My kids used Gametap more than I did, and now they're so frustrated they've decided they don't like it anymore.
Here's our list of problems.
1. It takes way longer for Gametap to load up.
2. I have to disable the parental controls on my browser to get Gametap to load. While this may not seem like a big deal to some, it's really a pain in the butt for me. I will not allow my children to launch an uncensored browser without sitting with them the whole time it's on. I can no longer let them play Gametap whenever they want.
3. They don't like playing games in the browser window. The games they like (Sonic, etc.) used to be full screen. They feel they're cheated now.
4. The new system is way more confusing.
5. The player sorted games into favorites, recently played, etc. The new system does no sorting that I can find, which means we have to scroll through a list of games (and if you're 5-years-old, squint at the icons) until we find the one we're looking for.
I want my player back and I want it back now. If I had wanted to play games in browser windows and deal with delays and sorting issues, I would have used a free gaming service. I'm not getting what I paid for.
It's bad enough that Gametap has yet to figure out a way to support 64-bit systems, but this just adds insult to injury. How dare you make us pay for a service that's still being tested! Furthermore, why would you want to complicate a program that was simple and satisfying to use?
We should have had the option of continuing to use our players if we didn't want to go through a browser.
Fix it! My subscription runs out in a few months. I will cancel if this company does not improve its customer service. I'm sure there are other, more agreeable, services that I can give my money to.
With Gametap's self-sabotaging problems, I'm beginning to wonder if this service was merely meant to be a tax write-off for the big guys.

What browser are you using? I use Firefox and it loads much faster than the player ever did. Quote: 2. I have to disable the parental controls on my browser to get Gametap to load. I know most parental control software lets you set up a "white list" of allowed sites that you approve of. Wouldn't yours allow you to add Gametap.com to the white list? Quote: 3. They don't like playing games in the browser window. The games they like (Sonic, etc.) used to be full screen. They feel they're cheated now.
This is a known problem and full screen play is a high priority to be reimplemented. Quote: 5. If you look at your dashboard (click the My GameTap link on the upper right), it should display your recently played games. I believe that the site also lets you set up a favorites list. Additionally, you can choose to sort the games alphabetically, by release, by genre, etc.

Re: Give us our player back
I'm in with you. The interface was one of the reasons I decided to be a paid subscriber. I may still keep it active... maybe, but as a free member, not as a paying subscriber. The browser interface stinks. On top of this, my child is approaching gaming age, another reason I chose Gametap was its selection of kid's games. With the change of interface, its just not worth the hassle. BRING THE OLD INTERFACE BACK!
And next time, ask your customer base before making this change (via the launcher, not via a forum, you'll find most people don't browse the forums (like me) unless they're upset about something or have a problem. You won't get a good statistical sample that way.

Wow, This is a real bummer. I can't play no games. How do I cancel the account? I just want to play my games. If it's not broke. Why change it?

Re: Give us our player back
While it is true that they should have kept the player until the new site was stable there is no going back now. The new site is gonna stay...
I personally like the new site...I can't understand how people are pissed at seeing 1 add in the corner, or losing 1 day of service. You all need to QTF down.

Re: Give us our player back
To me, new interface=Metaboli with a search function...but it doesn't even work very well in Firefox yet....and without bigger name titles...
...and we're basically beta testing their stuff without getting paid...whatever happened to companies hiring for such things? I know Gametap used to have an excellent program where you beta tested and got to use Gametap for free (almost like getting paid imo). Then they would finally release it officially. One of my good buddies from college did this. I really think they could've used that kind of testing.
Now the forums are just being bombarded with all kinds of support issues and a couple of moderators and tech people on here are trying to fix everything.
If this is what they released after taking so long I can only imagine how crippled Gametap would have been a week ago when it could've been released...
Just give us full support on the old player for a few more months until you guys get all this junk ironed out.

I have to agree with the first poster. Bring back the player. The browser player is junk. If I had wanted a browser player, I would not have went with Gametap.
