I believe AT&T has iPhone exclusivity until at least 2010 unless the Justice Department rules it anti-competitive. Additionally you wouldn't be able to use an iPhone on Verizon unless Apple released a CDMA version that works on Verizon's network... which is very unlikely, CDMA is dying a slow death.

What is more likely is Verizon will adopt the new LTE 4G GSM standard that current iPhones will work with. By the time Verzion gets that infrastructure in place AT&T's exclusivity will have expired.

What are the possibilities that Verizon would have up and running a LTE 4G GSM network infrastructure by 2010, if say.. they have been working on it for a few years already?

I'd rather wait for the HTC Hero to come out... Google Android for the win!

Verizon recently announced that they were projecting LTE going live in the first quarter of 2010. The rumors flowing are that they are accelerating their plans in anticipation of a new iPhone launching in the second quarter. Since at&t is also going to LTE in the next year or so it would make sense for Apple to be already designing a new iPhone for LTE.
