 Is Supreme Commander worth it?.
I nearly fell out of my chair when i seen the thing was 10GBs. Does it have a ton of units ..content..something...... anyway that's not my point. Is it worth the 14+ hours its going to take to download?. I have to leave my computer on for that entire duration or i chance the thing buggering up on me. i love RTS games but i know nothing about SC, I just have heard really good things about it and it looks pretty cool.

Supreme Commander is one of my favorite modern RTS's... Is it worth it? I certainly think so.

I think it's well worth it as well. It's missions/matches can take a few hours though so don't start one if you don't have that much time to spare unless saving and resuming matches doesn't bother you.

IMO, Sup Com is one of the three best RTSs ever made. Is it worth it? DEFINITELY.
Be warned however, you'll need a seriously powerful rig to run it well. This game eats up system resources like you wouldn't believe!

I guess I am the rebel here. I was kind of bored with Supreme Commander, to be honest. I had to crank the game speed up to max to not fall asleep when watching your units plod across huge, empty spaces. They wanted it to feel like you were fighting in a big world, and it does, but it goes to slow for my tastes overall.
The game isn't bad beyond that.

It's pretty different from most RTS games. I like most RTS, but didn't like Supreme Commander at all. There's a 1 GB demo available if you want to try that before downloading the whole thing. BTW, with most games, you don't have to download the whole game before you can start playing.

Re: Is Supreme Commander worth it?.
Depends on what you want it for. The campaign is... nyeh, each faction only has about six missions and the storyline is dull. If you've got some people to play with, though, it's a blast if you all know what you're doing. The focus of the game is less on building a giant army and marching all your units in and more on knowing just what your opponent is doing. Knowing where your enemy's units are is just as important, if not more important, than knowing how to beat them.
Obviously this means it's slow going, but if you don't mind that, I'd say it's worth it.

I much much much prefer slower paced RTS games rather then RTS games that you can only win by memorizing 100 hot keys and hyping up on red bull.
I also never play campaigns in RTS games, I always play skirmishs VS the computer.
Anyway its downloaded past the point where i can play it..4 hours left until its fully done.
Its so tempting to play it right now but when i did that with Rise of Nations, It buggered up and refused to finish downloading.
This brings me to a question. What exactly is still downloading?. If i play a partially downloaded game with some things be missing?

The download is arranged so up to that line it's downloading the datablocks required to start the game and, where applicable, the tutorial and first mission or two. If you progress through the game too quickly you'll catch up to the download and it could crash or leave you stuck at a loading screen.

I certainly recommend downloading the ENTIRE game regardless of the streaming function.

i bought the game in stores and it is well worth the wait(even though installing it from a disc is faster and its relatively cheap now(i saw it in target for 10 bucks) )

I'm the complete opposite. Games with out stories feel like a waste of time to me! Serously I just can't bring myself to invest hours of my life in games like Civilization (sp?) only to be rewarded with a score screen! If I could get someone to play me multiplayer however that would be differant.

Re: Is Supreme Commander worth it?.
My only issue with the game so far is the sheer -scale-.
I'm used to small scale, like Dawn of War or Warcraft, handling possibly hundreds (or MORE) units at the same time makes my brain hurt.

This was my main gripe as well, and it looks like SC2 will not be following the same formula.

Great game, it requires a different type of strategy rarely seen in RTS games. Thats what made it great, unit count and large map was just a added bonus. The learning curve is a bit long however...

Re: Is Supreme Commander worth it?.
It's a great game, no lie.
Frankly, it fell out of my sphere of interest because the missions where taking waaay too long for my tastes. You spend a lot of time amassing huge forces (on the scale other rts games dream about), and it can take a significate portion of time to do so. That said, this time lag allows it to truly focus on macro tactics, not just fast reflexes.
The tactics are really deep. Not only is there a huge number of forces to mix, but things like flanking and timing play a huge role.
It's different and pulls it off great, I just haven't gotten used to it's flavor yet.

Re: Is Supreme Commander worth it?.
If you're looking for good way to sort of ease into Supreme Commander, you might want to give the classic RTS Total annihilation a look. Many people (myself included) consider this game to be the spiritual ancestor of SupCom and, while nowhere near as large in scope, it offers over 150 different units per side to mess around with! The game has 25 missions per side in the single player campaign and it still supports a fairly small but equally vibrant online community as well. Trust me: mastering Total Annihilation will make Supreme Commander a lot easier to deal with (did for me anyway).

Re: Is Supreme Commander worth it?.
I'm going to have to disagree with most of the people here. I found the difficulty curve of Supreme Commander and the difficulty of controling air units very frustrating. A.K. the first half of the first tutorial level was easy, the second half took me an hour. The second level was kinda moderate. I never beat the 3rd level (the earth campaign). Same thing practically for the cyborgs...haven't tried the religious guys campaign yet, i got frustrated when my bombers had to take the long way through flak cannons for EVERYTHING!
