Well, before we get into all this...we have to check that we know our computing terms.
ISP's measure their service in bits, but downloads are traditionally measured in bytes.
There are 8 bits in 1 byte.
So, 500 kilo
bytes per second is the max speed of a 4 mega
bit line from an ISP (in theory).
The max speed of a 20 megabit line from an ISP (which are available for residential customers in lots of major cities now) is 2,500 kilobytes per second (in theory).
Now that the terminology is out of the way: would a person with a 20 megabit line get something close to their theoretical speed when downloading from Gametap?
No idea. I don't know anyone with such a line.
I know I have a 3 megabit line (max speed 375 kilobytes/second), and my downloads hover around 250-300 kilobytes per second.
But it's not ridiculous to think that Gametaps servers can spew out 2500 kilobytes per second to a customer. They have to be spewing out dramatically more than that already if they have even a few dozen customers running simultaneous downloads with broadband Internet.
