Don't be too harsh on GameTap for Freddy Fish. GameTap went into a serious slide that looked like it would lead to a complete shutdown. While GameTap isn't even close to the quality of it's heyday, it has been improving over the last year. They went from having completely abandoning the site except for the occasional visit to remove games, to having regular game additions, and a pretty constant presence by staff members here in the forum. They even did this while taking (the very fair) beating early on.

We are now seeing the original 3 new games on New Game Wednesday moved up to 4 or 5. If one of the 5 games added is bringing back one lost during the great purge, we should be to harsh. At the rate they are going, the idea that GameTap could regain it's previous value doesn't seem so absurd.

^^^ totally agree! GT has had its ups and downs. I miss all the games that GT had yesteryear! GT is making a huge effort to give us games... Wheres Assassin's Creed 2 by the way GT? lmao anyways I have a game to request if possible but I would like to see if GT can get the new You Don't Know Jack game I was thinking how it would be a great addition to GT!

hullo hullo. ancient subscriber with a brief history lesson in support of GT. as far as the ancient days of yore, when we still had access to a marvelous client and the fabled parallel download, GT got the proverbial shaft in terms of licensing. of course, as most leeches and lurkers tend to, they only noticed the part of the problem that affected them, the loss of service. not wanting to actually figure out what was going on, they jumped ship and screamed at the people who had been busting their asses to get games for them. now, the beating GT got was never fair, not in my opinion, because well, it really wasnt ever their fault. their business partners backed out, the userbase gave up on them and nobody wanted to hand games to the encoding team anymore. and yet the support staff still checked the forums to see what they could actually manage to help with. admittedly, they were all but useless at that point, but they were trying neh? and now its back to the way it was when i first joined. a gaming hub that mostly subsists on indy games and what few higher tier titles they can manage to get their hands on. except now they have an undeserved (again, imho) reputation, all because some angry users decided to topple their tower of babble. im proud to say that not once since i started using GT have i considered to cancel the service, because im an optimist that has seen what GT is capable of, and im confidant they can achieve that again...with our support, since they are, of course, a business.

feel free to disregard anything ive said if you desire, i tend to ramble sometimes.

also TL;DR version: GT IS TEH AWESOME, DONT GIVE UP YET :D:D:D:D

The only time I "had" to leave the service was that when my computer broke I had to buy a new one and it came with Win Vista 64bit now at the time they didn't have 64 bit support and I had to leave the service till they allowed 64 bit... I didn't like it but I have been here supporting GT since I started though one thing that is truly missed is that GT wasn't a Browser thing it had the GT player that was a nifty program and it worked sad that times have changed and we no longer get the player anymore but yea GT is an awesome service to have sure it has games that no one has heard of but it has games that you have! The plus I have to say is admins talk more than they used to which is awesome!! I know I am ranting on how GT is awesome but truth is GT has had its ups and downs losses and gains but its all about the devs on games that take away games not GT, GT tries their very best to keep the games and that's all I ask!

BTW Mr.Wong or Meta do we get a list of whats coming next week? Or is it Top Sercet? lol

This message board is great in that we can pretty much say anything and it won't get deleted by the admin. Even steam their rival was mentioned. I never knew about the Gametap collapse, but I'm glad their making a comeback.

64-bit issues forced allot of people to leave. There are some EPIC games here on Gametap. Just because I paid 60 bucks for them new and they're old to me doesn't mean there's not 1000s of hours here to be wasted at 10 bucks a month.

Steam really isnt Gametaps rival they service the same market but in a different fashion i have to say Gametap is a little like gambling i bought Blue toad murder files on steam for 20$ and a month later it was on Gametap lol and thats just one instance lol (Grid , Dirt , Dirt 2 ...oh the list ) but Drakensang 2 I got here and others Assassins creed , Broken Sword , Rainbow Six Vegas 2 are just some of the games i played on here and saved myself a little $$ I use both services what i dont do is go to walmart or best buy for games anymore

Woo I qualify as an ancient subscriber! Nifty!

I have to agree that things are looking better and better around here. It was pretty bleak for a while. Hopefully they are doing well financially and going to continue improving the service.

You're right as both distribution models are different : here you're paying for an entire catalog for a time period, while on Steam you're buying game by game. But Steam is our competitor for the Download to Own (i.e Buy and Download as opposed to subscription model which we call Games on Demand) model, even if it's a bit more complex (we sell Steam games too).

But what is really problematic with Steam for our subscription model is that it's very difficult to package full Steam games. It's like trying to apply a DRM (ours) to a DRM (xxx game with, let's say Securom) using a Steam Client/Player (which works as a DRM too).

right didnt mean to step on toes  to be honest i havent even clicked on that tab i dont know if you have sales and such im sure you do its just ive never really noticed (thats not the exact word hmm )the download to own tab if you had a client that came on like steams client and the store was a ever present aspect i would probably have a list of games from Gametap like i do with steam ps thats the only services i use i dont use the other digital distro services .when i look at the Gametap website it takes up like 2/3 of the screen with gray borders that could be used for advertising the sales or games on the download to own section.

We have something better in the loop for the coming weeks: backgrounds related to subscription games.

I agree. this have been getting better since they had the downloader. I just wish they showed what was coming out further into the future like they did before. That way you dont have to wait to the week before to learn what new games are coming out (unless there is a way to look and i just havent figured it out yet). anywho, not many good games coming out IMO but star assault looks like a good game from what i can see on google.

Post Re: New game day: Darkness Within 2 & Cold Zero
I have been with GT for a long time as well, and I have to say for me, it is less about the 'latest and greatest' games, and more about the older games that they helped to make run on newer systems. I left GT for a while after Uru shut down, I just didn't have time for gaming and shut down my subscription for a while. When I came back, there was no more client, we had this web based access which I like a lot less. Very few of the games would even begin to work on my old computer and it was frustrating trying to get support for the problems.

That being said, I like the games they have to offer, but wish some old faves would come back again. GT was all about bringing back the forgotten retro and mixing some new in with it. That is the magic they need to capture again. If it's about money, up the subscription cost, I'll gladly pay more to have the other games I want in a service worth paying for.

Just randomly went through the catalog.......I'm pretty sure everybody would agree that the casual section being the majority (big time) of the games is just plain not cool regardless of what genre you prefer. Am I wrong?

subscriber since 2006, more ancient than most of you if were comparing now? they cancelled my account on accident one time which is why my join date is later, so dont go assuming im some late comer just whining here. ive seen the complete demise, ive been holding my breath. how many puzzle games are we supposed to be excited about people?? my optimism wore thin long ago sorry. i got this for my kids, they loved it, then they took away everything we loved and now theyre dangling one here and there back at a time and saying "NEW" that was my small miff im not a leech/lurker for it because its the truth. i didnt say anything about the improvements on the support or the nice new board mods that are actually talking to us now. but once upon a time they had this magical phone line with people on the other end that would talk to you so theres my thoughts on the service changes.

Just to be clear guys : the 5th game released these past weeks is a "bonus" for those who asked for Kids games. Some of these titles are not really new, true (a mistake to tag them as NEW), some are. We have more Kids titles in the loop to come. As for casual games just take it as a permanent bonus: easy games to add to the catalog, easy games to play.

By the way, some users asked for Warlords Battlecry III to be back: we've scheduled it for a mid/end July release (need to be packaged/tested). Nemesis of the Roman Empire will follow...
