Post NEW TOURNAMENTS COMING
Just wanted to let everyone know that we have some fun new tournaments on the horizon. The first set of tournaments will be our Lunchtime Leaderboards beginning September 8th. Starting with Burgertime we will be having a different leaderboard tournament each day Monday-Friday. We will be using a different prize structure with these events where you will earn points from each tourney that can be used to buy from our Lunchtime Menu of goodies.
I'll keep ya'll updated as this gets closer and feel free to discuss and ask me some questions.

That is awesome, as long as it's not restricted to just lunchtime. Good to see something non-Grimm for a leaderboard tournament again, I was starting to get the DTs.

How many points for the Angela Lansbury puzzle?

Well, we were thinking of restricting them to lunchtime (lunchtime being 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM Eastern, so the west coast folks can play), but it's not set in stone. Also, just because we promote the tournament as "lunchtime" doesn't mean we can't leave the leaderboard open later into the evening. Thanks for the suggestion. Anybody else?

Sounds like fun! Just as a suggestion, is it possible that leaderboards could be added to Bubbles? (I had posted about it in the "Game Suggestion" thread, but I'm not sure if that was the right place for it/or if anyone saw it, so I figured as long as we're talking about suggestions for leaderboard competitions, why not bring it up :-) ) It probably wouldn't be hard to add leaderboards to Bubbles since it has the same Williams high score interface as Joust and Robotron, which are already leaderboard enabled...Anyway, it probably wouldn't qualify for a lunchtime favorite though, since cleaning a dirty sink isn't something most people want to think about while they're eating, but it's still a fun game! :-) Thanks

That's not too bad. Five hours is definitely better than two or three. I'm excited to play any of the days I am able. Sometimes work has me moving around a lot and I can't get to a PC where it's acceptable to play GT. Since the tournaments are paying out points for placing it won't matter much if someone misses one or two.

Would it be possible to have a large-point prize be something like a free month of GT? I mean i'd try to save all my points for an autographed copy of +Hey Dude!+ on DVD, but i'd definitely be tempted to buy a free month if it was even possible.

I'm glad to hear you guys like the lunchtime format. Once we get these launched, we're going to start looking into even more tournaments. Also, once the first 8 episodes of Grimm are done the Monday tournament will be back on classic games. For the next round of Grimm tournaments, we're probably going to look into doing them on a different day, since it seems like the Grimm participants and our usual tournament crowd are two very distinct groups of people. More on that later, but, yeah, many more tournaments in the future...

Way ahead of you... There will be free GameTap coupons on the menu.

We're actually looking into increasing our total number of leaderboard games in the near future. If Bubbles makes the cut, I'll see if I can get it pushed up on the list.

Thanks afeury! The leaderboards feature is one of the things I really like about GameTap...even though there are other sources for classic games online, not only does GameTap provide a legal way of playing them, but it adds a community-wide high-score list to games that were invented long before most people had even heard of the Internet

Hopefully they will be able to join in when they head to study hall or the computer labs. Maybe they can sneak in a few games while the teacher's backs are turned...lol

Hehe, study hall. When i went to HS study hall was not a credit so you didn't have to be there. My study hall was 5th hour which was the class AFTER lunch so i had a basically 2 hour lunch. It was awesome, and when i was there it was open lunch so you could leave the school grounds during lunch. Now the poor kids have closed lunch where i went, that would of sucked...

All of that - awesome news!

If you need an idea for more leaderboard games you could look into the Activision catalog and see what games they used to offer those patches for on the Atari. I remember playing Laser Blast (Atari 2600) for hours to get my patch, but was dissapointed to see it not on the leaderboard here at GT.

Other than that, I'd love to see a +Shark! Shark!+ leaderboard.

+Plaque Attack+ for Atari 2600? Yeah that game was awesome. It's like a 2-way +Megamania+ inside a mouth.

I bet you'd get kick out of +Spider Fighter+ for the Atari 2600.

A thought just crossed my mind!!!!

Why not make each tourney last for a full 24 hours or longer? maybe 36? that way everyone gets a chance!!!

Just a thought! ;)

Post Re: NEW TOURNAMENTS COMING
I don't think the full 24hours thing would work properly since there are a couple time zones involved. The Monday leaderboard format is 7am-midnight EST and that seemed to work pretty well.

I think the idea for these new ones would be more frequent (weekdays) yet shorter (11am-4pm or 5pm) tournaments. Plus they aren't handing out prizes automatically to the top 10. You will be rewarded with points that you can redeem for cool stuff.

So, the focus is on being a consistent player on the leaderboards to amass points over a longer period of time - rather than trying to bang out a 1st place performance in that one game in which you are a master. Missing 1 or 2 of the short tournaments shouldn't be a big deal (unless you miss one of your favorites).

I like the idea of shorter, more frequent tournaments. Besides, there is little value in attempting to gauge how well you did in the tournament until it gets close to the end. I've noticed a number of people who routinely play late during tournament times. So, the best hours are usually the last ones - making a short tournament a bit more intense as people are scrambling to get in scores before the deadline.

EDIT: I just rememberd, after they are done with the Grimm tournaments there will be classic games going back up on the Monday challenges so you will have your weekly longer tournaments as well. It'll be tournamentastic!
