Announcement: The New GameTap
We've just posted a deluge of information on The New GameTap in the blog. There is a lot to take in, so over the next couple weeks I'll post some in-depth feature guides with more specifics.

Re: Announcement: The New GameTap
wow, it looks like you guys really took our suggestions and requests to heart. Looks like everything I could ask for and more. Though I'm sure will be a few disappointed leaderboard players for a little while, and I will miss IM's till the bugs are worked out. Awsome job. Can't wait for the custom avatars and game short cuts.

sniff I miss my cozy little "shell" that the very fist GT client gave me.. Games, Videos, links to the community.. Why are you guys forcing me to go outside?!
That said, the benefits sound pretty good. I'm curious as to what the "Simplified multi-computer use" would mean, and I'm certainly salivating at the thought of customized avatars. Finally, McCarthy can rule this board!

You won't have to download the client for each computer, just install the little plug-in.

Re: Announcement: The New GameTap
Hmm.. Interesting. I already have the client installed on all four machines I play on though. ;)
I am really happy that command lines seem to be coming forth. Will the upcoming update also allow for easier transfers of the encrypted content?

Re: Announcement: The New GameTap
I'm assuming that playing the arcade and console games are OPTIONAL to play in the browser? I never liked playing games through the browser.

So any former client will be no longer usable? All web-based?

Correct. Everything will be on the web. We will also be improving the web experience to go along with this change.

Saturn and Dreamcast are not played in the browser, they can be launched from the browser, but they run in a separate window.

All the games are web-based? So no game assets are saved locally?

Re: Announcement: The New GameTap
Do we have an ETA on returning features like save states and customizable controls?
Also, I'm on 32-bit Vista, and have GameTap set to run in XP SP2 compatibility mode right now. It's the only way to get some games to work. Will I still be able to launch Windows games in compatibility mode?

Some of us have been here since close to GT's start. I saw the client with GTTV integrated, then it was removed, coupled with lesser dependence on the client itself for playing, which in turn ended up with the window being pretty much a small 800x600 little background object, rather than a nice safe room. :P

No, no, all the assets will be stored locally. Instead of video being displayed through the GameTap Client window, it will be through the browser window. Similar to the current browser play, but more full-featured.

I assume there will still be support to select a location for the data cache to be OFF the C:\ partition, right? ^^;

No ETA on these features yet. --I'll get back to you soon on the compatibility mode question.-- The devs don't think this will be an issue as you can set the compatibility mode on the new plug-in's .exe, just like the old player.

Re: Announcement: The New GameTap
Thank goodness for FireFox support. I always hated having to launch games in IE.
But this marks a complete end for GameTap.exe?

Yes, it will be set to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GameTap Web Player on XP, \ProgramData for Vista by default. But there will be a knowledge base article with very easy instructions on how to change the default location.

Hope it's easy. :P On three of my machines, C:\ is isolated from my games.

You guys can't show us anything other than that incredibly cryptic picture from the other thread though?
