Controller mapping did not make it into the release but is definitely on the radar. If you had controls mapped before the switch those were retained and are enabled.

I was really really REALLY disappointed about the new update. Bring back the client!

Have you spoken to tech support yet? They've been able to get a lot of people back running again so far.

and you say they tech support has gotten a lot of people working??? The fact that "a lot" of people had to use technical support in the first place is a bad sign.

It must be miserable for your support staff.

Lay off the insults man, most of us are volunteer mods with Real jobs. And GT was spun off a Fortune 50, which technically is a fortune 100. And technically they still kinda own it. (It's complicated stock stuff.)

To be fair, the announcement was on the player with a link to the blog for a month it seemed like, and they pretty well covered the progress on the blog. The even said when they were going to make the change.

I've been a long-time happy GameTap user who's never posted on these forums, so I didn't really want to speak up, but the sheer inanity of some of the complaints I've seen flying all over the place has just about compelled me to. I feel like I've lost even more of my faith in the general intelligence level of humanity, if such a thing were possible. The sheer lack of patience being displayed by so many is almost mind-boggling. So here's my (ultimately futile) attempt to inject some rationality into all of this:

1) Before all else, as the admins have been repeating over and over, the old player is gone. For good. Its database and servers weren't compatible with Metaboli's systems and are no more. It's the browser client or nothing. Either adapt or leave. It's not like it wasn't announced beforehand...there were messages in the player more than a month ago linking to the blog post announcing the switchover. If you were truly dead-set about any sort of browser client, you had all the time in the world to cancel beforehand.

2) To those complaining about the bugs that have sprung up in this switchover, I wonder just how much software you've used in your lifetimes. Every upgrade in the history of computing, no matter how well-tested beforehand, has resulted in some level of unexpected behavior at the very beginning. It's the nature of the beast. The only way to truly test a new system is to get everyone to start using said system and deal with said issues as they arise. This encompasses everything from new versions of Windows on down. Hell, as the XBox 360's "red ring of death" has shown, even consoles aren't immune anymore. If this concept is really completely unacceptable to you, maybe you shouldn't be using software in the first place.

3) On a related note...holy crap, people, have you never heard of something called patience? It's been all of a few days since this new system launched. The support staff has obviously been working feverishly to iron out the most critical show-stopping issues. Are you not capable of giving them just a week or two to do so? Even if you're on a monthly subscription, that's no real investment at all...and if you're on the yearly plan, you're not losing any money anyway.

4) To those complaining about IE permission issues, perhaps that's because IE is, as a rule, made of fail and lose. Try Firefox. You'll thank me later.

5) To those complaining about their precious little five-year-olds not being able to use the browser client on their own, maybe it's high time you taught them a bit about how the Internet works. Considering how well young kids adapt to technology, I find it incredibly hard to believe that they wouldn't be able to double-click on a desktop icon and work from there. Or better yet, simply stay in the room with them while they play, at least until they're actually in the game itself. Doesn't seem like a huge sacrifice to me. Or best of all, put the games away and sit your kids down with a good book. It'll do them far more good in the long run.

6) To those complaining about the new interface...just what's so "horrible" about it? I can view games by category. I can search for games. I can find out more information about games. I can choose to download games. I can play the games I've downloaded. Hmm...this all seems like the exact same sorts of things that the player did.

7) And to those complaining about all sorts of bizarre technical issues, perhaps you should make sure that everything on your end is up to snuff before troubling the poor tech staff here. Run Microsoft Update. Make sure your video drivers are up-to-date. Check your browser settings. Run an anti-spyware scan. Do any number of the little things you should be doing on a weekly basis anyway. Part of me has always sarcastically felt like there should be some sort of competency test before people are allowed on the Internet, and some of these complaints are making that desire far stronger.

I really don't want to be the type to jump all over people, but this is just getting out of hand. I have no idea how the poor mods and admins are coping without being driven completely bonkers. I also can't help but wonder how many of these issues are plain old user error, as I installed the plugin yesterday and (after a bit of a false start) have had no issues at all. Because of the advance warning we had about this switch, all I had left installed were a few arcade games, so there were no transfer issues whatsoever. I can download and play new titles just as easily as before; I managed to download and run an episode of Sam & Max without a hitch just last night. As software updates go, I've seen far worse.

So thanks for the upgrade, GameTap; the new system looks great. I can't wait for some of the features that haven't made it in yet to make their return, and I'm eagerly anticipating some of the new titles in the pipeline.

Please give us the source code of the old game client so we can mod it to be compatable with the new system and keep our interface.

I don't know what language it was coded in but I'm a coder and I have a lot of friends who code and would do this. You would simply have to either have the plugin running in the background within a browser or add a browser control to the old client that scrapes data and interacts with the new system.

PLEAAAAASE!! I want my full screen interface with controller support back!

all we need is the code to the old interface.

This new browser based ui is garbage. I wished I hadnt paid for a whole year now im stuck with it and i probably wont even use it. I definately won't renew next year.Email me when it doesnt suck anymore.

On one hand, I can understand what gametap is trying to do. On the other, a brouser based system is a major step down from the system they had before.

The old system was fast, simple, easy to get around in and many of the long time users were used to the layout. This new web based one is much slower, confusing, and since it's new, it has and will continue to have bugs for some time.

So ya I personally am with you all in saying, I too am very dissapointed with this change.

I'm sorry, but I just do. It was much easier, much more organized, and alot easier to look for something on it. I mean, how do I find out what the new games are for Thursdays?

Also, it was alot better because there were no scammy banner ads or ones that made me feel like crap, like that "a child dies every 4 secs" one.

Just, just why Gametap? How do you think this makes anything easier or better? The player is still in my honest opinion, better than this mess.

not at all likely. At best it's a trade secret. At worst there may be some code still used in the new client and you just handed out a security vulnerability. I don't expect Windows 98 source code to be released any time soon either.

I agree, the old GameTap was better, and now it's just a complete mess.

I like the new gametap alot more actually.

I liked the old also. hey im paying for this and i don't want to see banner ads.

people who liked the old one, like me, should be given a choice. It shouldn't be a forced thing. and this is still beta right, which means it's not even the finished version. So why has it become mandatory for us to switch to this? Nothing's downloading or playing for me, and I've tried quite a few solutions. I did that x and y thing already, where I reset my drives. Now I just either get a 4100 error or it doesn't even go to the dashboard. I'm getting really tired of this. I shouldn't have to go through this much to be able to play games.

I myself am completely lost.

I signed up less than a month ago and have been enjoying this service. Then, the other day, I logged on to continue playing King's Quest V. and discovered this whole new interface. I've been confused ever since. I can no longer click on the icon and start playing. I tried their "play online" option, but it sucked. The picture was too small and my saved games were gone. Currently, I'm paying for a service that I don't know how to use. On the plus side, I'm still on the 99 cent trial, but I will quit Gametap if I can't figure out what to do.

Can someone direct me to explanatory posts or the program I need to get back to my gaming?
