As am I, my power comp runs vista 64. If desired, throw my name in the hat.

"We already have an internal version of the GameTap player that downloads and launches a number of PC games on a 64-bit OS."

Why can't you just release a download of what you have and provide ongoing updates? I'd rather only have a few games than none at all. Have us sign the usual agreements and let us be on our merry little ways. I don't care if it works in my browser or not. To be honest, I'd rather have a standalone player when all is said and done, anyway.

I think most of us agree with you. But it's pretty much history that gametap does things it's way regardless of how it's customers feel about the changes. If gametap were to die I'm afraid this would be the reason.

I'd hate to be a wet blanket, but the last time GT did this (during the merger) everyone complained. I'm going to guess they don't want to try that again.

Agreed 100%, probably don't want the "We liked the old way better" taking more forum room. Like a few people have said, everyone left with 64 it wants it to succeed. Some even offered to test it out outside the studio (myself included). Either way, I'm sure they almost got it done and we can all continue with our merry way and possibly rebuild the user base (provided the people that said they're leaving actually did)

This, if you guys do decide to do a beta program for yummie I'd be more than happy to participate.

<soapbox>

Back on May 24, 2007, one of the Administrator's posted the following in this forum in response to someone saying that GameTap didn't care about 64-bit users:

"If GameTap didn't "care" about 64-bit users then no effort would've been taken to make the arcade/console titles available to 64-bit users, which DID take time, money, and resources that could've been used for other things."

Wow. First of all, I believe the emulators used for the console games is NOT the same one of the 3rd party packages that supports (or doesn't support) the Windows and 8-bit games.

Secondly, this message was from May of 2007. It's been over two years, and still 64-bit PC users are left out in the cold with regard to Windows games.

I canceled my subscription almost a year ago. I would rejoin GameTap tomorrow if they announced 64-bit support. And I'm sure hundreds of other people would as well, including the tens of thousands of people who purchased the HP Touchsmart computers which are great for this type of service but only come in a 64-bit variety.

GameTap, it's time to move ahead, change your loser 3rd party support "friends" who are providing your non-64-bit-compatible libraries and support the thousands of people you could have had for the past two years.

"Change their 3rd party support." I assume you mean like they're already doing? Perhaps you should read the first post, it's been updated recently (as in 64 bit is now top priority.)

I think that was RedEye. I remember back when I was a hardcore GT player I saw him almost everywhere. Of course, that was before what looks like cutbacks [Even RG is gone, I'm sure there's a different reason though]. Anyway, I'll say again, good luck, I'm sure everyone around that has 64 bit is saying the same thing.

Just rebuilt my PC and installed 64 bit xp. Never paid much attention to the forums and didn't know anything about the 64 bit issue. Been a subscriber for a couple years, cancelling today. Very sad.

Quite sad, especially considering that 64-bit support is actually just over the horizon, the latest Blog post is a poll asking what games we want to be in the first batch of 64-bit updates...

http://gametapblog.com/the-64-bit-question-choose-wisely/

Quote:
With GameTap’s 64-Bit compatible encryption update on the horizon, we need to start re-encrypting existing titles to take advantage of this new tech. So I’m asking you what games you’d like to see re-encrypted in the first batch. Keep in mind there are other advantages that even non-64-bit users will be able to take advantage of such mods, patches, and custom maps. Use the poll to place your vote, I’ve included some of our most popular titles to get things going but don’t be afraid to use that “other” option to write in a vote. There is no guarantee that your pick will be chosen for that first batch but we’re really looking at you guys for guidance in this. Hit the jump and make your choice.

So, hopefully I can get rid of my 32-bit Partition soon.

Likewise, can't wait to actually play Psychonaughts and Portal on the same computer. I'll finally have a "Gaming Rig" and a "Casual Computer", not both doing both.

Post Re: The Official 64-bit Support Suggestion Thread
I'll post to this as well. I run Windows 7 64 on my Macbook Pro and since it's based around Vista it works perfectly fine EXCEPT for the 64-Bit part. I actually called Gametap a while back about this and after about 20 minutes of an obviously uninformed explanation, I was told that 64-Bit is not in the works nor are there any intentions to develop 64-Bit support. It should also be noted that running Gametap on Mac OS does not support any Windows games (at least last time I tried, but it's 64-bit either way). No surprise there, but a Windows OS?

I hope that I just got a really bad rep on the phone. I certainly hope that 64-Bit is coming VERY soon since a vast majority of the library I'm interested in runs on a Windows based emulator. It's funny really. All the illegal methods of running emulators run fine on 64-Bit systems. Heck those cats live and breath coding so they run on practically any system. So I would say in an effort to combat piracy, how about supporting the customer and actually supporting 64-Bit operating systems! They're not as uncommon as you might think (Computer Tech here).

They've already licensed the encryption and have put a poll up on the blog for which game will become 64-bit compatible first. So yes, it will be fixed.

any time line on when most of the games will be 64-bit? Is it going to be one game at a time? the only reason i ask is to decide if i should cancel my subscription or not.

I can't give any definite timelines yet, but it will be sooner rather than later. We're really getting pretty close. And yes, games will be added 1 at a time to start, but once we are more comfortable with the system, we'll be swapping older games to the new system as well.

Finally! First time an official-type has said that (so plainly, at least).

This is really good to hear. Since I upgraded my computer to a point where I can actually play most games, I'm glad gametap will let me access games much easier.

I was doing my bi-monthly check of GameTap to see if it finally resolved the 64-bit issue (in which case I could finally reinstate my subscription) and I noticed that the "Classic Pack" has the title "64 bit ready" on the sign up screen (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8761/64bitready.jpg).

So I guess I'm wondering, does it actually work with 64-bit vista, or is it just saying that when they get off their lazy asses and re-encrypt the games it will work with 64-bit?

The answer to that is YES. All Browser games work in 64-bit Vista.

For the record, browser games have worked with 64 bit vista for a long time. The only games at issue were PC games (for a while Saturn and Dreamcast games were an issue, but that was before 64 bit even went main stream, so I'm not counting it.)

Post Re: The Official 64-bit Support Suggestion Thread
A new GameTap player with 64-bit PC game support has just officially been delivered into QA for final testing.

For those that aren't technology geeks like me, this means that the new player is pretty damn near close to being ready for delivery. Assuming the test phase goes well, you should see it within a couple of weeks. All of the major software development tasks for all aspects of the 64-bit game delivery process are basically finished.

The emphasis now shifts toward getting titles ready to be released. We have a boatload of games that are already available for our new 64-bit compatible game encryption, but each one has to undergo its own short QA process, publishers need to approve some of the titles, and web content needs to be written for all of the new games.

So what you can initially expect to see will be a couple of 64-bit compatible games trickle out at first, then once we get the content train rolling the games should start flowing out pretty steadily. I looked at the list of games in the queue and its pretty sweet.

More news when we have some,

Tyrion
