Post No Prawns Allowed
Did anyone catch District 9 this weekend? Easily the best action/sci-fi since The Matrix. Original script, amazing fx, great (if over-the-top) performances, I can't wait to see more from Blomkamp. I got the impression that Blomkamp is himself a pretty big gamer, there was a blatant Half-Life 2 homage near the end. Perhaps he really could pull off a good Halo movie. I don't want to say anymore for fear of spoiling it.

Downright amazing movie that came out of nowhere and kicked all ass. I'd consider it the second-best movie so far this year.

Going to see it on the 22nd with my wife. She isn't too excited, but I think the movie looks awesome. She really wants to see G.I. Joe (Which highly shocked me) so we might do two movies that day.

Glad to hear from people, other than reviewers, that it is great.

Peter Jackson does it again. He had what, a quarter the budget he had on either King Kong or LOTR? And he still put out a fantastic movie.

I'm tellin ya, this guy could very well be the next Spielberg. :D

Only Jackson was producer, not director. >_>

True. But do you think this movie would have been as good if PJ hadn't been involved in some way? I somehow don't think so.

I hate Peter Jackson so that pretty much precludes me seeing the movie... thought the fact the he only produced it may get me into the theater if everyone keeps telling me how great it is.

Maybe that's a good thing. King Kong did not excite me at all. I felt like he spent too much on special effects at the expense of story. Also he should have stuck to his "never make another 3 hour long movie again" statement, because it was far to long.
I will however reserve judgement on this movie as I have not seen it.

I do, or I think it's very likely. If you check out Blompkamps's short-films it's clear he had all the talent and tools to make D9. You never know though, sometimes the best producer is the guy who does his part and leaves the creatives alone, he'll stand back and let the director/writer's vision unfold.

I LOVED this movie. I really enjoyed how the main character developed contrary to normal cliques. You'd expect that after being a spineless coward for the whole movie he'd grow a pair and take a stand. Oh he does, but only after he betrays the alien. It takes most of the movie for him to actually develop into a semi-hero. I started out pretty much hating the guy, and the ending choked me up pretty good.

Amazing movie.

Also, it's cool to note how they had a stand-in actor playing all the Prawns, and most of the dialog during the eviction scene was improv'd. Cool stuff.

Mech is short for Mecha. The robot thing that the main character pilots at the end of District 9 is a mech. For more info on the subject you can check out the Wikipedia article.
