. . . We have been prototyping a system tray application that would help you monitor your download queue and launch all of your local downloaded games (emulated games included) without using the web browser. If that sounds like something you would be interesting in seeing us roll out to the masses, I suggest you start some feature request threads and make some noise. Constructive forum feedback can go a long way toward helping business people make positive decisions for the GameTap product line.

Bring on the tray client! Bump it to the top of the list once the Yummy release has been confirmed rock solid.

Everyone post like mad here so the bean counters get the message.

Ahahahahahahahahaha
ROFL!

Ok, kinda silly that they need a demand thread for something they're prototyping. Nobody even knew about this until Tyrion said "make some noise for it". Who around here wouldn't want a new sys tray app, especially considering how many people are complaining about the browser app? Why do we need a thread to tell GT we want them to do something they're already doing?

I Vote NO!!! How dare you make something convenient for us! BRING BACK SOUPTAP!! CHILI MAKES YOU FART!

j/k' sure, put down my name in support of this idea. :geek:

Ah geesh, why's GameTap trying to do something else now? The staff is in over their heads as it is. Let's see here:
-Updating and fixing the browser plugin
-Bringing back old features
-Bringing 64-bit support
-Working out deals with new companies
-Now making a tray client

Every time I return here, they're trying to add something new. While this tray client sounds like a nice idea, I'd prefer if the GameTap staff try fixing what's broken before they try anything else. It's like souping up a racecar when the engine doesn't even work.

IMHO most of the old features are back (save states, full screen.) I suppose customizable controls still need some work, but I think that's in the short list now.
64-bit is all but ready from the way LC's been talking. Old games will need to be reencrypted and tested, but I'd imagine that's not going to take away from development time.
Company Deals is likely done by an entirely different department, there's no reason they should interfer with program development.

While they do have a lot on their plate, this isn't something I'd throw out just because it's more work. I imagine it's doable with limited impact on progress already being made.

I have to say, having this as a feature would make GT far more enjoyable to use. Having to use the website to launch most games and having the browser come up when using a local shortcut (thereby bringing in use of the website) is pretty annoying for me. Actually, it is only a little annoying (unless I have a lot of tabs saved that then have to load), but it also means that I need to Alt+Tab out of the game after it has launched to close Firefox so that I gain back a couple hundred megabytes of my RAM which is pretty annoying. So other than getting some of my favorite games, such as Psychonauts, compatible with 64-bit OSes, this would be one of my high priority feature requests.

Add this feature... Oh god.. Please add this feature..

Add a sort function with it and I will honestly love you.

This feature is a large step towards what the 1000 people raging that we lost the old player want.

Customized controls, multiplayer. Big features over silly tray icon, nobody needs more tray icons.

Evening Gametap Community,

I'm sure this will sound like a broken record from what little I have looked around on the forums, but I used Gametap back when it had a Real Client, I made a new account about 2 weeks ago and must say I am very disappointed with what I see. Half the games I have tried don't work and the webclient is one of the worst content delivery systems I have ever seen. Anyways, how long till this Tray client is supposed to be released? It would be nice to be able to enjoy Gametap again.

Thank you for your time

Customized controls may heavily depend on getting the tray app, they aren't mutually exclusive.

That means we need to make noise for the tray app. It sounds like that will make it easier to implement other features we want.

I really hope they are working on a tray app and dis the browser altogether.

I understand why they might have thought going with a browser based system might be easier for the users in theory, but it seems the limitations of it outweigh the benefits.

Ok, you guys win. The system tray project has been approved, and we are currently estimating that it should be available in early 2010.

The GT tray app will include:
- desktop startup / login screen so you can bypass the browser
- download queue that you can manage
- quick launch list for "ready to play" games
- emulated game display in a dedicated window (no browser needed)
- lots of customizable user options
- easier ways to shutdown gametap / post logs / get support

And we won't be breaking any of the web stuff for those of you that like it.

We are pretty excited. Once we get this done, look for us to add all sorts of delicious features to it :)
