 Aveyond
Is it just me that thinks this game was made with RPG maker? Controls like it is, the battles are the same, even has Enter and Space acting the confirmation. Maybe it's a coincidence.

 Re: Aveyond
I'm pretty sure it is. I remember looking at the website when it was first added to Gametap, and it mentioned being made in RPG Maker.

 Re: Aveyond
It is, but it doesn't stop it from being a pretty good old-school RPG. I've only played II but found it enjoyable, I hear the series gets better with each sequel.

Yeah--it's one of the more famous RPGMaker games. If you search for the developer, you'll find a sizeable fan community.
Back when GT had extra promotion for the indie games on the service (or does it still do that?), the Aveyond series was part of it.

Not a game designer myself (but close friends with several, and a contributing beta tester to a few unfinished builds), I can tell you that much of the community feels that Aveyond gives them a bad name, for, among other things. "It gives the feeling that RPG Maker is only good for anime style RPG's" "A lot of free games are better than their work" "It's not right that they get paid for what they do"
I don't completely understand it, as I kinda liked what little I played of the first game, but if it's anything like WiNE users complaining about Cedega being a paid ap...
