@ tsrblke2. Re “Cloudy, with a chance of GameTap” thread.

Alright, fine. You caught me. I was complaining, whining even. The thin guise of feedback was weak at best and the thread was destined for a train wreak ending. You were right to close the thread. There, I said it.

However, I am unclear on what you meant by “Forcast: Move to generic complain thread.” Are you suggesting that I take my complaint elsewhere, here for example? Or were you saying you're killing the thread because it will just illicit more complaints? Honest question, was confused, that’s all. Oh, and you miss-spelled forecast. :P

I was merely parroting your closing statement with horribly failed comedic intent.
Allow me to translate:
"I'm locking this in favor of the already long complain thread" We started a policy to keep them all in one place

Fair enough and thanks for taking the time to respond. Also, I put my actual suggestions into a new thread, bereft of the complaints. :D

I loved the old player. I was a subscriber for two years. I loved the feel of the client. I loved the games. I loved how it made me feel like part of a community of gamers that genuinely seemed to get why old games mattered to people. The new site reflects none of that. I was going to pay for a new year subscription, but not anymore. You just lost my 80 dollars. I will torrent my old games now. :{
A sad, irritated, former Gametap user.

How exactly did the old player make you feel that you were a part of "a community of gamers that genuinely seemed to get why old games mattered to people"? :|

P.S. downloading games via torrents is illegal.

Rather then come off as "complaining", I'd just like to have my name added to the "list" of people who wouldn't mind seeing the old player.

I know we've been told it won't be coming back. But some of us can hope that our "voices" will make a difference. It's happened before.

OK, so I've skimmed through this thread, and I want to add my two pennies to the huge jar of complaints. I don't really need a response, I just want the people who now run Gametap to know how I feel, even though I doubt they even pay attention to this thread anymore.

I don't like how Gametap runs anymore. I've used Gametap for a long time under a different account, and it was possibly god's gift to man-kind. It was a quick, easy, cheap, and reliable way to play awesome games, many of which are hard to get a hold of now.

I am no longer a fan of Gametap. Since they got rid of the player, and made it completely web browser based, I have had nothing but trouble. Half the games I want to download don't work, and the customer service can't help me make them work. This is a bad system. I know its possible to have a good system, mainly because Gametap used to be a good system.

I know complaining about it won't do much. But I'm an unhappy costumer, and most businesses like to address customer's problems. Bring back the player, or at least make it an option. I don't like your website, it doesn't work for 75% of the people I know.

Have a good day sir! :x

I would love the old player back as well, or at least fix this crappy web browser system. I was one of those people that got Gametap when it first came out and they would routinely ask me how to improve the player. Now it seems like in the modern day and age Gametap has made a significant step backwards in customer support, reliability, and overall content. Now Gametap has been stripped of it's shiny exterior and we are given the barebones of it all at the same price and it works worse then it did years ago. Sure people will say that I am complaining, but I am just stating what I see right now!

Gametap is officially no longer receiving my business or 3 of my friends who I know used it. Guess we'll just dig out our old consoles again and start downloading emulators.

Unless drastic change is made this boat is going to sink farther than it already has, and it's pretty clear that no major improvements are happening.. ever. Way to take a wonderful thing and rape it into the ground.

How amateurish, you fools should be ashamed.

I will never again hold the name Gametap with the high regards I once did. I feel almost personally offended. Beta, lol.

Downloading emulators is illegal (well, the emulator isn't but the ROMS are).
How criminal, you fools should be ashamed.

Yeah, no major improvements like 64-bit encryption, fullscreen, save states... :|
Look again. There are major improvements made with every player update.

I'll cancel the premium membership and just keep an eye out for when they improve the service a ton...

Can't even play any games I really want and games I played a few days ago won't load anymore.

I do agree that this was better when you had an actual program to load up instead of the browser.

Actually, it's perfectly legal to use emulators and roms so long as you own an original copy. It's also legal to maintain backups of your CD's and DVD's. Furthermore, I don't think Nintendo or Sega are really making any money off of NES or Genesis games anymore so even if you were pirating them it would be about as morally unethical as wiping your butt with a cleanex. Damn you're an idiot.

Except, I haven't been able to utilize any of those features because my brand new top of the line computer apparently brings out the worst in the entire GameTap infrastructure. LOL.

Now get GameTap's hand out of your pocket and man up to the fact that a lot of is seriously up for other people that aren't you.

Also, this is the "I miss the old player/ I don't like this compilation thread" thread, meaning this is where posts go from people who miss the old player or don't like this compilation. You just don't understand that do you? You don't have to be here at all.

So, you own originals of these games and you're going to go download the ROMs? Why even pay for a subscription in the first place?

They're copyrighted material, and illegal to download (unless you own an original copy) regardless of whether SEGA or Nintendo are "making money off them anymore". I doubt SEGA is letting Gametap have their games for free so they're obviously making some money off them. And thanks for the insult. Just because your morals are looser than mine doesn't make me an idiot.

Sega and Nintendo are still making money off the games through the virtual console.

Also, watch the insults and language.

Damn, use your imagination. I don't own all the games I've played on GameTap. And before you go anally onto the next point to support your feeble argument - I'd prefer downloading them so I don't have to dig out my Genesis, the broken controllers, the video converter, dozens of games, etc etc etc. Surely you can understand.

Individual companies own the rights to games and many of them have made their legacy software public domain. With a little searching you'd find that a lot of the classic and arcade games offered are already available free and legally.

So, if you would, please just leave the complaint thread to complaints and kindly get out if you have nothing on-topic to add. I appreciate that you can't grasp the concept that other people have opinions and experiences that differ from yours but I'm not here to argue for the sake of arguing, so please spare yourself any additional posts.

Just because a game has been made free in one venue (such as our own free catalog) does not mean that the game is free for anyone anywhere. Except for a few very rare cases where the original rights holder has explicitly released the rights to the public, the concept of "abandonware" is a myth.

And even in those cases it's not called abandonware. There's a fancy legal term for it I don't feel like looking up now. Freeware is acceptably close for our purposes. And even in cases where Game have been released by the publishers into the freeware world, they tend to maintain the copyright (See: Marathon)

Post Goodbye Gametap
Edit: This is a repost from my other thread that was locked since there seems to already be a thread for all the complaints, I guess they want to keep them all in the same place.

I've had Gametap for maybe 2 years or more, originally got the account for my wife to play arcade games, etc. I enjoyed it immensely on the old client, games would download, load, not crash.

Ever since going to the new web client, I've had nothing but problems on multiple PC's. Everything crashes, FAQs and support forums are no help as those with the same problems their questions go unanswered. Overlord menu's won't display so I can't even get into the game, Dawn of War crashes when I try to load the tutorial, and Tropico 3 just crashes to the desktop. Essentially every game I download has some stupid issue. I'm better off buying the games elsewhere. Games I download and run in Steam, or just off CD run just fine, so I know its not the PC even though I've tried playing games on multiple PCs and Windows installs.

Gametap, go back to your old client, it worked, this new one is crap. My membership is up for renewal this month and I will not be renewing it, because for the last year I haven't been able to play anything. I feel like I've been ripped off.

What sux is even if everyone starts dropping out they won't change...gametaap clearly isn't interested in what we want. We've been complaining about this switch for quite some time, and it's actually become more difficult to get in contact with the people that can change it. Odd, big businesses with anti-customer service are usually the enemy of the gaming crowd; no sure why we're sticking around and giving them our money. I think I'll have to drop out when my year is up. Sad, I'm still getting the $60/year deal, and even at that, it's not worth it to have to go through the browser client. Sorry gametap, I really really tried to get on board with this, but I rarely use my account now because you changed the UI. It's one of the worst user experiences I've ever encountered. Give me a client before December, and I'll stick with you.

You leave me no choice gametap. It's December and I'm still stuck in a browser based UI. I'm out! I'll cancel my Premium account today just like I said I would. You had plenty of time to fix the UX. I hope others follow my example so you see it's worth it to invest more resources in our requests. Send me a postcard when you get there, and you might win back a customer.
