Damnation
Image
It is decades after the outbreak of the Civil War, and conflict still rages over what is left of what was once America. The invention of powerful new steampunk weaponry kept the war going, and much of the country is now a desolate wasteland known as Damnation. The inventor of the new weapons has named himself Lord Prescott, and rules over the land as an absolute and evil dictator. You play as Hamilton Rourke, an outlaw, and it is up to you and a small band of rebels to stop Prescott at any cost and end the war once and for all.

I didn't hear good things about this, but I'll give it a try anyways.

Hey, I got an email about this and it also mentioned Call of Duty: Modern Warfare being aviailable, but I can't seem to find anything about Call of Duty in the current library. Was that a typo?

Note to admins:

While I admire your honesty, having the first comment on a new game be "you know you didn't hear good things about this one, but shucks, try it anyway..." probably isn't going to encourage new users to sign-up to GT...

Then again, I suppose it does save GT the potentially wasted bandwidth for those who download an 8GB game just to delete it an hour later... But if it's that bad, why take the time to encode and test it?

Three weeks ago some other service out there had a sale going on this game. I almost bought it. (I would have had the service not had a limit on the numbers of games it allows you to buy in a certain time period...) So, either that game ain't _THAT_ bad, or I have terrible taste in games...

Either way, GT's saved me some dough, so I'm appreciative of GT...

(I logged back into my account just maybe a month ago with the intention to cancel before it renews, then I noticed they're finally encoding in 64-bit... It saved me from canceling... For whatever reason, I wasn't aware they were finally doing this... My point is I'm not certain GT is doing enough to advertise and announce they are now supporting 64-bit OSes... Just an FYI...)

GT: I'm not much of a gamer, but for the price (I believe I am locked-in at $60/yr, or $5/month as I like to see it) of a single game (or a few games if you don't buy on release date, okay...), you can have a year's-worth of entertainment. I signed-up two years ago for access to some of the "retro gaming" of my past, but the fact you have fairly new games (Prey, FC2, TMNF) that are more than worth buying (I'd buy Prey/FC2/TMNF all over again...) as part of your service is an absolute plus...

Since I'm not much of a gamer, but with your 64-bit support I might just stop buying games that I never bothered to get around to playing (FEAR, Quake 4 I bought on release day and still haven't bothered with 'em), and just leave it to GT to provide...

But, seriously, I wish GT would stop giving the impression that it dogs on itself... It's not going to encourage new customers... (It's honest, just not encouraging...)

Then again, I know Far Cry 2 is one of the most hated games from last year from what I've read in forums, whereas I'd suggest it get nominated for GOTY or something... (so you better not dog on it, too!) So, maybe I have poor taste in games...

Or maybe it's to each their own?

(so, seriously, don't dog on the games you offer, please!)

(Sorry, I love your service, I don't want anyone turned-off by anything... So please don't flame or ban me...) ;)

I'm just a volunteer mod. I'm allowed to speak my opinions, just like you're allowed to speak yours.

And a quick glance at GameRankings would've told you exactly what I said.

When I posted that, GT's current ranking on the game was 9.7. I admit at the moment it's now dropped to 8.5.

But you weren't speaking your own opinion of your own experience. Since when is ignorance an opinion? Trying it then posting I'm all for! if you try it and it's a turd, well, it's a turd...

Perhaps GT should re-think its volunteer mods? It doesn't encourage anyone to dog something you haven't given a shot at, no? (Although your preceding "just" in front of "volunteer mod" speaks already...)

I believe GT needs some encouragement. ;)

Dude! Where you part of the development team or something?! Geesh. First of all Buster didn't even give his opinion of the game! He simply stated that he heard bad things about the game which is a fact! Second he said he was going to give it a try which actually encourages others to do so! And thirdly I'm glad when the mods give us their honest opinion. That's what makes us a community of gamers that can speak openly about anything (that doesn't have the potentional to hurt others) game related or not.
Now for my opinion: Your a troll and not a very bright one if the volunteer mods are your target. Of course thats just my opinion. They can still lock posts and swing the ban stick. That of course is a fact.

I guess I'll ask again,, this morning I got an email from gametap that mentioned not only Damnation, but COD: Modern Warfare. I'd like to know what's supposed to be happening with that, as I've heard good things about the call of duty series and would love to give them a try.

As another Volunteer mod, we've got a great set of them, GT did well. Stumble on over to a Major console's forum if you don't believe me.
Buster was refering to Gamerankings.com, not GT's rankings. GT's rankings tend to be skewed one way or another as it's a voluntary ranking system. Voluntary polls tend to skew results one way or another, as it's often been shown that only people with strong preferences vote. Gamerankings however is a aggegator service that takes critics scores (who have to play and write up reviews or they lose their jobs, thusly slightly less voluntary) and thus may or may not better reflect a "normative" value. Of course there's also no accounting for individual preference, which is really what matters, I suppose.

Nevertheless, GT is a company, not a person. I'm not really sure encouragement is needed. Plus Even it 100 games suck out of the 500 or so PC games, (not even counting the arcade games) that's sitll more games than the average person has time to play, so I'm not sure calling one game bad is the deathknell of GT.

I want to say thanks for the warning Buster, this game would have pushed my old computer to its limits (I have barely enough RAM for it and my video card is old as dirt) and knowing it's not that good makes me feel better about passing it by. ;)

I decided to give thsi game a try, it isnt bad like all the reveiws show but it has a generic feel to it. The game is kind of like a mix between prince of persia games and gears of war. it seems to take ahwile to kill an enemy and swapping between weapons is a bit slow, but the game is worth a try.

The biggest problem that I have with the game is the gameplay. The developers forgot certain fundamentals. Like when is a WASD control scheme "S" is backwards not "do a 180 and fall of the cliff that was behind you". And when the bad guys get shot they should react to the bullets entering their body not just continue to well (wail? wale?) away at you with unerring accuarcy. Only bosses should be able to kill you in 1 sec and even then it should be the end bosses. Never disable the camera in a 3rd person platformer. Oh and as fun as it is to kick bodies around like soccerballs they really should allow weight in their physics equations.
In short didn't they beta test this game? I mean its gorgeous is a intriguing and imaginative storyline (even if it is basically Wild Wild West gone way too far). Great sound ect. But it just isn't that fun to play. Makes me wish for the days of Shining Force and Final Fantasy Tactics. When the develpers didnt have all this space to play with so they devoted it to gameplay and not pretty screen shots for game reveiws and advertisement.
/end rant

There were just as many (if not more) bad games back then as there are now.

It's neat being a little older: I remember thinking FFT was a diamond among a load of horse when it came out. (And I never played FF7, because I was too busy making a fool of myself pining for the glory days of FF3(6) and wondering what the world had come to.)

That being said, I think there's a truth hiding in what MobiusArcher says (though Mobius might disagree with the grain I find by the time I've made it my own, considering his choice of classics): There are very noticeable differences in the nature of console games versus PC games (mostly related to differences in input methods and demographics of their traditional audiences). And the last time I went to Gamestop, they had about 10 PC games in stock, compared to a thousand or so console games.

And I do consider that a "downward" progression.

EDIT: Sorry about that.
