 Re: GT Tray Client
Awesome. I do have one question. Will the tray app include a search function, or will we still have to use the browser to add games to our queue? Either way, I think I'm going to like this even more than the old player.

 GT Tray Client Suggestion
Since your building from scratch, it would be really nice if the try client was built to allow easy integration of third party front ends. What that mostly means is command line tools. Things like: Command line to launch game that does not return to the prompt until the game exits. Command line to get list of all games and their associated ID. Command line to get list of already downloaded games. Command line to initiate a download. With these, it would be easy to use many of the existing emulator front ends. This would allow those of us that want a fully integrated gaming environment to have it, without the effort of supporting a full client yourself. I currently have the Windows version of XBMC set up as a front end on our TV. The only problem is that the browser ends up making it extremely kludgy, since the front end can launch the games, but when the game closes, the browser has to be manually shut down.

All game search and discovery of new games will remain on the web. The web is better equipped to do search the right way with topic hubs, genres, filters, etc. When you choose a game to download, it will continue to push you over to the My Games page with a download list, but you will also see the download start in your tray client. After that, if you want to manage the download, you can exclusively do so from the tray. I honestly think that if we do these things the right way, we may end up with a better product than we had with Turner. A light-weight tray app that is exclusively dedicated to game play may end up being better than the old Turner player that had multiple types of video support, the burden of advanced OpenGL/3D graphics, and all that marketing messaging.

 Re: GT Tray Client
As much as the old client was fun. I do remember the pain of the OpenGL and various driver issues. I probably spent most of my original Beta time looking at scrambled screens and the mess. Frankly, I didn't merely browse games enough to make it worth it. (Almost every time I updated my drivers!)

Tyrion wrote: Ok, you guys win. The system tray project has been approved, and we are currently estimating that it should be available in early 2010. The GT tray app will include: - desktop startup / login screen so you can bypass the browser - download queue that you can manage - quick launch list for "ready to play" games - emulated game display in a dedicated window (no browser needed) - lots of customizable user options - easier ways to shutdown gametap / post logs / get support And we won't be breaking any of the web stuff for those of you that like it. We are pretty excited. Once we get this done, look for us to add all sorts of delicious features to it | | |
*cries tears of joy* *sighs happily* I love you guys.

 Re: GT Tray Client
Someone can probably explain it better than me, but ill give it a try. The Task Bar that's (probably) at the bottom of you screen, the one with the Start button on it, has what's called the System Tray. Its right next to the clock. It may or may not have icons (small pictures representing applications) showing on it. The tray client would be an icon located there. I imagine it would work by right clicking on it to bring up a menu were we could launch games and the like.

 Re: GT Tray Client
Consider this a vote for the tray icon. It's disconcerting to leave the games window and wonder if the games are actually downloading. The system tray icon would help in this area I think.
PS: How hard can it be to fix the GameTap plugin such that it works with SeaMonkey 2.0? Are the plugin interfaces that different between the two browsers?

Another one standing up for the tray client...I resist this move to cloud computing!
Just kidding, but a tray client would be very helpful for downloading/launching

I'm in, due to how awful my computer is. I want to free up a large chunk of the little RAM this computer has.
Seriously, have you ever tried running XP with 256 MB RAM?

Dude, you seriously need to check out this freeware program called "Game Booster". You can find it here http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html. I've been using it for over a year now and swear by it.

Seconded. Game Booster is awesome. Also, you should be able to get some more RAM for pretty cheap. Especially only 256 megs. Unless you don't have an open slot. In which case it might be time for an system upgrade.

I want to see how well this puppy plays, but I'd definitely re-subscribe for a tray client that works well.

I'm sure many would. I subscribe just because the forums keep me amused. I might play a game off here if I like it.

Yeah thanks for the link guys! I always wondered how I could shut off all those annoying apps I never use! And the Advanced System Care is great too. It actually fixes problems on my PC instead of just letting me know they are there! For free!

 Re: GT Tray Client
How soon will it be after this "tray application" is released until you geniuses realize, "Hey, we can stick some spyware/adware in there and sell that for extra cash too! It's already authorized with our EULA." *Ugh* There's no saving Gametap, I lost all hope, I was a subscriber in 2008, I come back this month and find what's happened, I'm in disbelief. RIP Gametap

 Re: GT Tray Client
Just wondering if there was any update when this GT tray client might be available.. Also, will it involve redownloading my games, as when Gametap changed from the old client to the web browser client? This does sound like a great idea, and I do notice that you are starting to get quite a few more 64bit games out each week, which is the #1 reason I went and bought a new PC (1Ghz processer and 384Mbs of ram just wasn't cutting it, hehe). At first, when I came back from a year ago, I was a little disapointed by web client, as I know you are tired of hearing, but I really do belive that all of you guys are going to make the service rock again real soon.. Thanks for all you do!

 Re: GT Tray Client
Wow..... Never before have I seen a service decide to downgrade like this... Almost regret getting talked into getting gametap just because it uses a laggy/sluggish browser only interface.
Honestly why? And there's no update on here form the mentioning of over a year ago. Oie Knew I should have just stuck with Steam.
