 The Cavern Returns
Uru Live is now open source, and very much alive.

Awesome. I'm a big Myst fan and always wanted to try that game but never got the chance.

 Re: The Cavern Returns
I post it here mainly because Uru Live was on GT for the longest time. There was a huge blowup about it when it was removed at least a year ago. It just wasn't profitable enough. I'm glad to see it going open source, that's definitely the right move to make.

 Re: The Cavern Returns
Back when the game was removed there were hundreds of posts from irate customers claiming that removing that one game was going to single handedly put Gametap out of business. I thought it was funny at the time. Its even more funny now.

It was one of GT's biggest selling points for a long time too. I seem to remember they hyped the heck out of it, TV commercials, banner ads, the works.

 Re: The Cavern Returns
I don't mean to open old wounds or start a flamewar, but it did take me back. Back to my first month (for $1), back to the old client, the commercials, that startup sound (god, someone have a copy of that?). Sam and Max was just finishing it's first season (that was what drew me into GT in the first place). Uru Live sat in a corner acting very artsy and intriguing. I never got into it (and I suspect most of those who did are no longer here with us), but it was certainly something different.
It felt more like something you explored and experienced, even more so then the regular myst games. I think the fact that it was online had something to do with it. Things didn't just stop when you hit pause. The world felt alive, which made the exploring even more thrilling.

 Re: The Cavern Returns
I played it for a few days back in...07 I think on GT and I didn't see a single other person the entire time. It looked like it would be a lot of fun, and I was intrigued by the idea of building your own island, but yeah, didn' see a single other person, so I moved on to other "real" single player adventure games.

 Re: The Cavern Returns
the place was a boneyard online.it had a very high barrier of entry for newbies. like most games of myst, the game always hinted of something mysterious and otherworldly but never delivered on a plot ( I only played the beginning, I was bored to tears). I got past the first cave in the desert and chalked it up to a waste of time.
I have also tried the first myst game multiple times, and I always ran into a bug where it could not continue after entering the numbers in from the first note.
I won't miss cyan's myst series.
