Post Best Game System of Each Generation of Gaming
Alright, there are a total of 7 generations and you must give an answer for each. To relieve (or create) any confusion, I will be using this for reference http://www.gamefaqs.com/systems.html

My choices are...

1st Generation: Tie between Arcade machines and Odyssey (duh)

2nd Generation: Atari 2600 (duh)

3rd Generation: Tie between the NES and the ZX Spectrum

4th Generation: SNES and Game Gear

5th Generation: Playstation

6th Generation: DREAMCAST!!!

Current Generation: PS3

I abstain from most of these because I was exclusively a PC guy at the time.

I did have a 2600 as a kid, so that's a given for me.

Generation 6: PS2
I should note however that if a game was released on both consoles I would always go with the XBOX version. It didn't have the slowdown that the PS2 had, It supported better special effects (bumpmaps and the like), and most importantly its controller was far superior. PS2 had more games though. It was also was the only real choice for JRPGs

Generation 7: XBOX 360
It has a much better selection of games. It has more JRPGs than the PS3 (whats up with that? ) Plus, Its controller is probably the best gamepad ever.. The PS3 controller was a big step backwards. The sticks are too loose, and the trigger/button things suck. I consider those triggers to be the button equivalent of the Spork. They cant decide what they want to be, so they end up being worse than just straight up buttons or straight up triggers.

2nd Generation: Atari 2600 (only one i played  )

3rd Generation:NES

4th Generation: SNES/GameBoy (GameGear was pretty impressive but you had to play it plugged into the wall because it used batteries like they were air you had to pay for. :( )

5th Generation: Playstation/PC

6th Generation:Game Boy Advance/GameCube (i would probably say PC also but i had a crappy PC that was no good for games for a LONG while  )

Current Generation:DS/PC(this is the worst generation for controllers to me,i agree with what Mobi said about the PS3,my fingers slip off the 360's joysticks and the Wii has mushy buttons/D-pad and the D-pad is too small. )

PC, from top to bottom.

Rational: there are entire genres that don't exist on any console.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the current consoles. I like the Wii but it is third for me right now.

Overall though I lean heavily towards PC for gaming. Most of the time, if a game comes out on consoles and PC, I will grab the PC version. Especially strategy games, most RPGS (modding is a lot easier for PC), I just find controlling armies really awkward on consoles.

So toss me down as PC for all the choices as my favorite.

I still have a Commadore 64 I play Rat Race on a couple times a year.

for me its

PC (exlusive games on it)
PS3 (exclusive games like god of war I II and III, Metal gear solid 4, tekken 6) includes free online has nice wireless controlers)

sega Dreamcast
Super Nintendo
Nintendo
Atari 2600

I cant really get into the 360 games, sure lots of games but same with wii and only 1/100 are must play games. Then the new improved 55% failure rate of the 360 I just cant drop $300 for it with that risk plus the no blueray at same cost no wifi (costs extra was $100) more watts so it runs little hotter and is noisier.

Add the propriatary way overpriced 1.8" xbox hd vs the ps3 2.5" laptop hdd that you can change easy to any pc drive for better cost per gb then xbox. I mean the 40gb costs what a 250gb costs for ps3!!!!

So ya xbox with same features is like $450 vs $300 on ps3 and no blueray. Nope I had to pick and last week was simple ps3 120gb for $300 hahaha. You can plug a 360 controler into ps3 with adaptor

which? A genre is like FPS RPG MMORP etc etc all on both they both have exclusive games but entire game types not on console which? The thing that bothers me about pc is there are only a few platform games that are worth playing. Thief, Prince of persia and Assasins creed. No games like god of war, dante inferno etc etc. No mario types etc. Some games you have to get a console for. Now for pc there is FPS that no console can be close how it plays. Some rpgs same I cant use the control for that need mouse keyboard heh.

Guess I gotta be the one to speak for the Vectrex. This thing was a generation unto itself. You didn't even need a TV. :D

There is a problem with it though. If you play it too much, it starts to make a buzzing sound.

Strange, mine doesn't make any noise. And it's over 25 years old! :D

Of course, I never leave it on for long periods.

I dunno, for this current generation, obtrusive DRM and high system requirments, creating high barrier to entry (I'm looking at you Crysis) may tank the PC. Mass effect 2 for example runs great on my xbox, but it stutters and texture pops on my friends PC because he can't afford the upgrades to "reccomended specs"
