Post Couple of newbie questions
Hey Everyone,

I'm new to the site and had a couple questions.

How long generally is d/l time? Are all premium games downloads?

Can you play the classic games online and continue to d/l a premium game?

Thank you!

The download times are going to be pretty variable depending on how good your connection is and how large the game is. All games are downloaded, but many of our classic titles are under 1 meg, which is only a couple seconds to complete.

And yes, you should be able to play a classic game while downloading a Windows title.

I have a 3mb connection and I tend to get around 200-300kBps, though sometimes it might dip as low as 50kbps. (FYI: Max theoretical speed on 3mb is about 375kB. )

Some people have a problem with that, but I'm pretty content with it.

With a 10 Mbs connection, the highest sustained d/l rate I've seen is around 700 kbps. But I usually average around 300 or so. Also depends on if you have anything eating up your bandwidth at the same time.

I never watched the exact speed for my downloads, but I did Silverfall which is 14 GB in around 40 minutes. I haven't had many complaints about the downloads here, you should be happy with your experiences I think.

Wow. I have an 8mb connection and, like you, I've never gotten more than 300kbps either (and I've seen it dip as low as 30kbps).

Like you though, I don't have that much of a prob with it. If it's a big file, I just set it to download then go game on my PS3 till it's done. :D

The 64-bit encrypted games usually go twice as fast (or more) than the ones still awaiting the new encryption. IIRC, a mod once explained that this was because the new encryption system is essentially downloading a single big file, whereas the old one split it up into several packages.

Thanks everyone. I've downloaded a few now and haven't had any that were TOO bad. Really enjoying this site so far. Lots of games from my youth :)

It is a really good service. I do admit that I still miss the old client, but they have smoothed the bugs out mostly (or people complain less now). Just wish the advertised more so the player base was bigger! Don't want to see Gametap closing!

I have never had bandwidth problems with Gametap, and I always have a sustained 200-400k connection.

Mine is completely random. Sometimes I can get a game to download at over 1 mb/s but other games it can go down to about 100 kb/s.

I's like to know the answer to his second question. Do you have to be on the Downloads page to download games or can you just be on the website?

I think, in theory, once the plugin is started, the downloads happen even the if your close your web browser.

I don't trust that though, because I have a noisy DSL line that drops connections every now and then, so I leave a tab open with the download page in it so I can check back and reload the page on an error.
