 Arx Fatalis - spell casting help

Post Arx Fatalis - spell casting help
Help, I draw the runes correctly and they show up in the upper right corner but the spell doesn't ignite the torches. When the runes show up in the upper right there is no red 'X' through them but it does nothing. After about 5-10 minutes the fire further down did finally ignite but I have no clue what made it work the one time and I haven't been able to reproduce it.
