New Game Day 7.29.10: Warhammer 40K Dawn of War - Soulstorm
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - SoulstormWhen a freak warp storm appears in the Kaurava system, nine factions descend, each with their own goals. Some want to control the storm; others merely want to use the chaos to start a fight. With two new playable factions, the Sisters of Battle and the Dark Eldar, plus new flying units, Soulstorm is the largest Dawn of War expansion yet. Our other new games this week are: Farm Frenzy 3: American Pie10 TalismansOur new 64-bit game this week is Sam & Max Save the World (aka Sam & Max Season One) Since our system does not let us link all the old individual episodes to the new single package, the old episodes will remain available until the end of August, then will be removed. The descriptions will be updated to reflect this change. Next week's new game will be Europa Universalis III.

You also had a western themed sim game and the 64-bit release of Psychonauts an hour ago; what happened to those?

Those two aren't actually ready for release and were briefly viewable by accident. They'll be in next week.

Well, today would've been nice(r), but I'm just happy it'll be here, that's one of the main games I subbed for and was heartbroken when I noticed it wasn't 64-bit compatible yet. And I certainly can't complain about another War:40k games, they've all been pretty good, Europa Universalis III is nice too.

TV Tropes and Metacritic do a good job of explaining. Think Civilization, but in a more specific setting (1400-1800), and with many, many more nations and options.

It's a strategy game in which you control the government of a country from the late 15th century to the late 18th. Just about every nation existing at the time is playable and there are a wealth of options for what type of country you run.

It is a strategy game concerning European nations primarily, although you can control other nations around the globe. You can work on trading, conquest, colonization, and more. I own the game on steam, it is extremely difficult with a very steep learning curve. If you can get past this, you will have a great time. Think of it as a historical simulation.

It sounds good. Am I correct in assuming though that most of the nations are fairly similar to one another in terms of how they play; sort of how many of the armies in say Rise of Nations are fairly similar? Either way, I can't wait for the mighty Peruvian Empire to raise it's head!

In the sense that the game mechanics are more or less the same for all nations: Yes. Otherwise, no. You have to understand, the nations aren't balanced at all. The major powers of the time are major powers. The minor powers are minor powers. The weak nations are weak. So, if you decide to play as the Inca (the Peruvians), for example, you will be slapped around like a redheaded stepchild by the Spaniards. They'll have guns and cannon. You won't.

I enjoy compliments as much as the next guy, but it's a fairly common saying.

That said, can one take a minor power and eventually turn it into a major one? Break history in effect?

Sure. But there's a reason it happened the way it really happened.

I actually like that. Making some tiny inconsequential nation conquer the world is going to bring me much satisfaction.

Prepare yourself for an incredible difficulty curve...
From what I've read (no experience with this game yet), the best way to start out as a minor nation and have a good chance is to take one of the tiny, splintered provinces that exist in modern Germany at the start. If you conquer enough of your equally tiny neighbors, you get the chance to *become* Germany, a major world power in the later game.

Rather than that is it possible to create alliances with your equally small and pathetic neighbors? Thus creating at least a fairly powerful political alliance which you could use to increase your influence? The ultimate aim of which would of course be to eventually betray and absorb your former allies once you grow strong enough to do so
