I've got a PS2 to USB converter, so depending on the game I'll switch between the following:

-Regular PS2 pad (for games like tomb raider, etc. Basically modern games that it would work best on)
-Street Fighter anniversary 6 button pad (a decent six button pad that I like for classic arcade games and fighters).

I also have two PS2 joysticks but I haven't bothered to try them out and see how they work.

The first reason, and the most important is that the directional pad blows. Whenever I pressed a directional button, it went everywhere but the way I pushed it. The second reason why I returned it was because the recoil housing made the controller very unconfortable due to the recoil housing being so large and in the way.

Yes, the D-Pad on the GGE is certainly sub-par. I returned my first one for that reason, the one I've got now isn't quite as bad. The housing doesn't bother me too badly but the ribbon cable is just goofy to try to deal with. It's still a decent controller I think, but it isn't winning any awards heh.

The keyboard for me, though I'm thinking about getting that adapter you were talking about, since I want to use my Guitar Hero guitar with Frets on Fire (Guitar Hero for PC, and free). While I'm doing that, I'll probably just plug in the old PS2 controller I have, for maximum platforming pleasure. :P

Logitech Rumblepad 2 Wireless for me too. Very good controller, pretty sturdy and the battery life is pretty good.

I think almost every controller on this list can be gotten a best buy store for less than $40. I know my logtech dual action was ~$15-$20. (Who needs rumblin'?)
