You are Roderick Hero, president and CEO of the Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation. Your job is to save stranded miners deep inside the now-volcanic Mount Leone. Armed with a heli-pack, a microbeam laser and a limited supply of dynamite, you work your way through the dangerous shafts of the mountain, blasting walls to clear new paths and shooting any hostile indigenous life that gets in your way.

This Week's Prize

In addition to the GameTap swag that the other nine winners get, the person with the top score on Monday will also win this week's Grand Prize, an original copy of H.E.R.O. for the Atari 2600, brand new in its original shrinkwrap!

This is the European version of the game, so I don't recommend trying to play it on an American television. Think of it more as a trophy than a game.


All-Time Champions

The all-time high score for the Atari 2600 version of H.E.R.O., as recorded by Twin Galaxies, is a tie at 1 million points, recorded separately by Twin Galaxies referee Todd Rogers and active environmentalist David B. Yancey.

The all-time GameTap high score is 291,940, recorded July 8, 2006 by mystery user twilight13.

Get practicing, folks, you have six days! Here are the official rules:

  1. Contestants will have from 7 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, July 21, 2008, to submit their scores to the leaderboard via the GameTap client.
  2. Only the top score per TapID will count toward the contest, with all other scores being thrown out.
  3. Only one TapID per household will be eligible.
Free users, take heed: H.E.R.O. is a Premium game, and can only be played by those with Gold accounts.
