Controls
Press the one player start button to begin the game, or the two player start button to play simultaneously with a friend. Your P-38 fighter will appear on an aircraft carrier at the bottom of the screen. When it takes off, use the controller to move it in any direction. Press the fire button to fire your cannons, and the roll button to briefly stun your enemies with lightning or tsunamis.
Enemies
Enemy planes and jets soon fill the screen, flying in dazzling formations and pelting you with bullets. Dodge their shots and fire back with your cannon. It only takes a single shot to down most enemy fighters, but others are larger and more heavily armored. You'll need to hammer these repeatedly with shots before they will go down in flames.
Fuel
Your plane has a fuel gauge, shown in orange on the bottom of the screen. As time passes, this fuel gauge slowly depletes. Contact with enemy bullets will rob you of precious fuel, and collisions with enemy fighters are even more costly, draining a large portion of it. Run out of fuel and your ship will explode the next time it's struck by enemies or their shots!
Powerups
Formations of red planes carry a POW symbol which adds fuel to your gauge. However, firing at this symbol will transform it into one of four different weapons. It's important to quickly decide what you need the most before the POW symbol scrolls off the bottom of the screen, leaving you with nothing at all.
Bosses
Halfway through each stage, you will face off against a series of battleships, each more dangerous than the last. Fire at each of their guns to disable them, while dodging their cannon fire and fleets of enemy planes. One final battleship waits for you at the end of the stage... this enemy is as well armed as it is enormous, but it must be destroyed to advance to the next stage.
Tip: Battleship
While on the ocean's surface, it's important to take out as many battleships as you can. A high destruction ratio earns you bonus points and extra fuel, while a low destruction ratio means you'll have to repeat the stage.
Tip: Roll Without Bombs
Using the roll button on its own fills the screen with lightning that destroys the smaller onscreen enemies and stuns the larger ones. However, this attack lowers your fuel gauge. If your fuel supply is low, it's better to use a barrel roll, by holding down fire and pressing the roll button.
Tip: Limited Arsenal
The weapons in 1943 all have time limits... when the timer at the bottom of the screen expires, you return to the standard twin cannon fire given to you at the beginning of the game. Keep collecting weapon icons to increase this time limit, allowing you to use your favorite weapon longer.
