Getting Started
Press the one player start button to begin your fight for liberty, then the two player start button if you'd like a friend to offer some assistance. Your ship will appear on the bottom of the screen. Use the controller to move it in any direction, and the fire button to fire a stream of bullets at the enemy ships and planes in your path. Use the bomb button to clear away surrounding enemies and save yourself in tight situations.
Powerups
The Axis forces will be a constant threat throughout each of the game's fifteen stages. Show your air superiority by gunning down the formations of planes and the armies of tanks in your path. Some planes will release helpful items after they're destroyed -- these include small escort ships, enhancements for your main cannon, and additional bombs. Fly over these power-ups to collect them.
Charging
Sometimes your cannons and even your bombs aren't enough to win the war against the Axis forces. Luckily, your ship has a secret weapon. Hold down the fire button, and a meter will appear on the bottom of the screen marked ?Charge.? When the Charge meter is filled, release the fire button and your plane will climb over its opposition, raining down a devastating hail of lasers for three seconds.
Bosses
You'll face a boss at the end of each stage. To proceed, the boss must be destroyed within a set time limit. Fire on each of its weak points to bring it down and end the stage. If you can successfully destroy the boss, you'll be given bonus points depending on your performance. Fail, and you're returned to the beginning of the stage to do the job right!
Lives
Each player is given a single plane at the start of the game, with a limited amount of energy (shown as a bar at the top of the screen). Collisions with enemies or their bullets lower the energy bar... once it's nearly empty, flames jet from the wings of your plane. One more hit and it's game over for you! Press the one player start or two player start button to resume the action after your plane is destroyed.
Tip: Strategy
Smart use of your charge meter will give you an edge in boss battles. Start charging the meter when the boss memo flashes onscreen, and continue charging it until it's nearly full. Top it off and release the fire button AFTER the boss starts firing bullets to ensure that it will be vulnerable to your attack.
Tip: Bombs
Escort planes can be used as makeshift bombs in a pinch. Be sure to collect all the escort planes you can, for those desperate moments when you're out of standard bombs.
Tip: Overheating
Use the charge attack only when you're sure you'll need it. After using the attack, your plane overheats, preventing you from charging for a brief period of time.
