Getting Started

At the title screen, use the arrow keys to choose between the available options, and the enter key to confirm your selection. You can choose the Single Player mode to test your skill against computer opponents, the Multi Player mode to challenge your friends, or the Options to adjust the settings to your liking. In the single player mode, select Championship or Quick Game to start playing right away, or Practice to get a feel for driving a dune buggy.

Controls

After you've selected one of the game modes, use the arrow keys to highlight Start Game, then press enter. Your buggy will be placed behind a starting line alone with five others. Once the countdown starts, rev your engine by tapping the up key. When the countdown timer hits zero, the race begins! Hold the up key to accelerate, and press down to apply the brakes. While driving, press the left and right keys to steer in those directions.

Checkpoints

This is no ordinary racing game! 1nsane has no finish line -- instead, you'll compete to reach a series of checkpoints scattered around the track. The location of the currently active checkpoint is shown as a green dot on a map in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Next to the map is an arrow; drive in the direction indicated by the arrow to reach the checkpoint. Drive through the checkpoint before your opponents to score points.

Races

Your ultimate goal in each race is to meet the checkpoint quota before the other racers. This quota is shown on the bottom left hand corner of the screen. If you drive through the required number of checkpoints, you'll win the race and, in the Championship mode, will unlock more difficult challenges. If you lose the race, you can always restart it: just highlight Restart Game from the menu that appears and press the enter key to jump back into the action.

Tip: Don't Flip Out

Don't get too careless! If you race too quickly over hilly terrain, you could flip over your buggy. You can right yourself with the R key, but it takes five long seconds to get your ride back on its wheels.

Tip: Let 'em Have It

If you've driven through a checkpoint and the next one is less than two hundred feet away, don't bother trying to reach it. Your opponents will be closer to the target and will almost always arrive there before you do.
