Getting Started
Press the one player start button to begin, or the two player start button for a fierce game of futuristic baseball against a human opponent. Press the controller left or right to select from the two available leagues, then press the swing/pitch button to confirm your choice. Use the controller to highlight one of the six teams in that league, then swing/pitch to proceed to your starting line-up. Finally, select your pitcher with the controller and swing/pitch button.
Batting
In a one player game, you'll always be the first up to bat. Move your batter around the plate with the controller. When the pitcher tosses the ball, send it skyward by tapping the swing/pitch button just as it flies over the plate. Press the bunt button instead to keep the ball close to home plate. If you swing and miss, or if you connect with the ball but it drops into a foul zone, you'll earn a strike. After three strikes, the batter is taken off the field and you receive an out.
Running Bases
If you DO hit the ball and it flies into the green zone, the batter will automatically run to first base. If a member of the other team catches the ball as it drops, an out is declared and that batter is taken off the field. If you safely make it to first base, you can steal another base by pressing steal/fake along with the direction of the nearest base (for instance, press up and steal/fake to steal second base while standing on first base).
Pitching
The teams change position after three outs. Now you're on defense, pitching the ball and guarding the outfield. To pitch the ball, hold the controller in any direction and press swing/pitch. The speed and curve of the ball depends on the position of the controller. The object is to make the batter strike out -- try to be as unpredictable as possible in order to make that happen. Just don't hit the batter with the ball! Any batter tagged with the ball gets to advance to first base.
Taking the Field
After the ball's been hit, press the controller in any direction to move your fielders toward its shadow. When the ball drops, stand directly under it to catch it, and an out will be declared. If the ball touches the ground, you can still score an out by first walking up to it, then pressing swing/pitch along with any direction on the controller. You'll throw the ball toward a base, giving the baseman there a chance to tag out runners.
Hazards
This isn't your grandfather's baseball game! Changes have been made to the game in the future, making it more challenging. Jump zones have been added to the field, and any fielders standing on them are thrown into the air when you press the swing/pitch button. Fielders should also watch out for "crackers," land mines scattered on the field in the game's late innings.
Money
Like in the old-fashioned sport, you score points in 2020 Super Baseball with home runs and RBIs. However, you also earn (and lose) money depending on your performance. Catch that pop fly and you'll earn money, hit a batter with a ball and you'll lose it. Money can be used to purchase power-ups for your players. Press the time out button to enter the power-up screen, then select the player and power-up you wish to purchase with the controller and swing/pitch button.
Games
A game of baseball ends after nine innings, with the team that scored the most points being declared the winner. In a one player game, however, games are split into three minute segments. When time runs out for a segment, press the one player start button to extend your time and continue the game. Keep pressing the one player start button when needed, and you can play up to fifteen games of baseball against the computer!
Tip: Past Their Prime
Pitchers can be pushed past their limits. Be sure to call a time-out when your pitcher starts to tire out, or they'll be too exhausted to send the ball over the plate. Your android players will even catch fire and explode when they're nearly out of energy!
Tip: Play Nice!
You are heavily penalized for hitting a batter with a ball. Not only will that batter get a free trip to first base, you'll also lose a thousand dollars... money that could be used to enhance your players.
