Basics
As with most RTS games, Age of Empires II works through a point and click menu system. Each unit and building has various abilities, just select your unit and click on the menu option on the bottom left to tell it what to do. To move units, just point and right click where you want them to go. You can also group units by dragging a box around them with your mouse.
Resources
Step one in building any effective fighting force is making sure you have sufficient resources. There are four types of resources: food, wood, gold, and stone. All are gathered by the villager unit, though food can also be gathered with fishing boats. To gather your resources most effectively, be sure to put the proper resource building (mill, lumber camp, or mining camp) near the resource so your villagers don't have as far to walk.
Buildings
Villagers also handle all your construction. Use the build or military build options to see what buildings are available and what the resource cost will be. Some of your most important buildings include houses, which let you add more units, the barracks, which lets you build infantry, and the blacksmith, which lets you upgrade your troops. Be aware that some more advanced buildings may have prerequisite buildings or may require you to be in a higher age.
Game Modes
In the Standard Game Mode, you start with a town hall, a few villagers, and a scout, and you must grow your civilization and defeat all the other empires on the map. It is important to defend early so as not to get wiped out by a scouting party. Age of Empires II also includes multiple Campaigns. Each set of campaign games follow a certain group or hero as they fight through a series of challenges. These campaigns are based off the real life stories of Joan of Arc, Saladin, Ghengis Khan, William Wallace, and many more. Campaign missions will have specific challenges and goals for victory, so pay attention to the objectives at the beginning of each round.
Tip: Tutorial
The first campaign, the William Wallace campaign, serves as a tutorial for the game as a whole. We strongly recommend playing through this campaign, especially if you haven't played many RTS games before.
Tip: Scouting
Scouting early has many advantages. You will know what the surrounding area is like, potentially find where the enemy is located, find new resources, and find flocks of sheep. Sheep can be selected and ordered to move like any other unit so you should order them to move to your base as soon as you find them.
Tip: Tech Tree
To see all the technology available to your civilization and the prerequisites needed to attain a given unit or building, click on the tech tree button in the upper right of the screen. You may see that you need to be in a more advanced age. To move to the next age, you will need at least 2 buildings from your current age, plus a certain amount of stored resources. Then you can choose the update from your town hall.
Tip: Revenge of the Villagers
If the enemy is attacking your base and you're caught without defenders, you can get your villagers to help. Simply select your town hall and press the town bell button. This will recall all villagers into the town hall where they will unleash a neverending barrage of arrows.
