Basics
Age of Mythology is a traditional real-time strategy game based on the Age of Empires series, and contains most of the same mechanics, so if you have played AoE, AoM will be very familiar to you. As with most RTS games, Age of Empires II works through a point and click menu system. Each unit and building has various abilities, just select your unit and click on the menu option on the bottom left to tell it what to do. To move units, just point and right click where you want them to go. You can also group units by dragging a box around them with your mouse.
Buildings
For most races, villagers also handle all your construction. Some of your most important buildings include houses, which let you add more units, the various military buildings, which let you build troops, the temple, which generates favor, myth units, and heroes, and the armory, which lets you upgrade your troops. Be aware that some more advanced buildings may have prerequisite buildings or may require you to be in a higher age, and each race will have slightly different buildings.
Races
There are four different races to choose from in Age of Mythology: the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Norse, and the Atlanteans. Each race has slightly different mechanics, so you will need to pay attention to the tooltips when you mouse over a unit or building. For example, the Egyptians have a special hero unit called the Pharaoh that can empower buildings, the Norse infantry serve as your builder units, and Atlantean civilians do not need to go back to the town hall to return resources. More importantly, each race has its own selection of gods and myth units to choose from.
Tip: Power of the Gods
Each god has a special god power that you will have the option to use. They require no favor or other resources, and can be used whenever you wish. The powers include Ares' Pestilence, which prevents your opponent from building new units temporarily, Zeus' Bolt, which will kill any enemy instantly, or Ptah's Swirling Sands, which can teleport units. These powers are very useful, and can turn the tide of a game in your favor. However, you can only use each power once, so decide wisely when to deploy them.
Tip: Heroes
Hero Units are especially powerful units that usually will cost favor to build. Besides being better than basic unit types in general combat, they have extra strength when facing myth units. Keeping a few around is a good way to ensure that your opponent can't overwhelm you with myth units alone.
Tip: Revenge of the Villagers
If the enemy is attacking your base and you're caught without defenders, you can get your villagers to help. Simply select your town hall and press the town bell button. This will recall all villagers into the town hall where they will unleash a neverending barrage of arrows.
Resources
Step one in building any effective fighting force is making sure you have sufficient resources. There are four types of resources: food, wood, gold, and favor. The exact mechanics will vary somewhat by which race you choose, but generally your villager units will gather from resource locations. To gather your resources most effectively, be sure to put the proper resource building (granary, storehouse, etc ) near the resource so your villagers don't have as far to walk. Favor is a special resource generated by temples. For the Greeks, villagers will need to pray at the temple. For others, the temple will generate favor automatically.
Game Modes
In the Single Player Game Mode, you start with a town hall, a few villagers, and a scout unit, and you must grow your base and defeat all the other players on the map. It is important to defend early so as not to get wiped out by a scouting party. In the Campaign Mode, you will follow the story of Arkantos, a fictional Greek hero. Each campaign mission will have specific challenges and goals for victory, so pay attention to the stated objectives.
Gods
When you begin a Single Player game, you choose your race by picking a major god to worship. The god you choose will determine which race you are. The god will provide a special "god power", new myth units that can be summoned, and usually bonuses that can be researched. You will begin in the Archaic Age. To move to the next Age, you will need a certain amount of resources stored, plus certain buildings. Then you can choose the Age upgrade from the town hall. Each time you upgrade, you will have a choice of two minor gods to worship, each with their own powers, units, and bonuses. You will not be able to change your mind, so choose carefully.
Tip: Scouting
Scouting early has many advantages. You will know what the surrounding area is like, potentially find where the enemy is located, find new resources, and find herd animals. Herd animals can be selected and ordered to move like any other unit so you should order them to move to your base as soon as you find them.
