Basics
Alien Shooter: Vengeance is an isometric action game reminiscent of Crusader and Shadowgrounds; or like a modern version of Robotron 2084. It's all adrenaline from beginning to end, with literally tens of thousands of aliens swarming through most missions. As the designated alien shooter, you've got to free trapped civilians, get the power on, handle a bunch of other menial tasks, and (naturally) shoot aliens. This cheerfully retro game is perfect for satisfying your hunger for ultra-violence.
Controls
The controls for Alien Shooter are very simple: using the mouse, maneuver your targeting reticule around the screen and click or hold the left button to blast away at the hordes of enemies. Move to the targeted area by right-clicking, and use the small icons at the corners of the screen to track health and armor, equipment and weaponry. There are usually so many enemies onscreen that aiming is an unnecessary luxury; just avoid attacks and blast away -- but watch your ammo!
Character Advancement
You begin the game by creating a character. First choose a perk -- one of several moderately silly innate qualities that can help on your mission: money management, regeneration, alien hypnosis and so on. Then you select one of eight pre-made character archetypes and the game begins. As you destroy aliens and complete mission objectives, you'll earn experience and level up. At each level you can spend five new points on base physical skills like speed and accuracy.
Equipment
Alien Shooter includes dozens of weapons: shotguns, machine guns, rocket launchers, pistols, even energy weapons. Each has slightly different capabilities, but they're all reasonably effective, so stick with a favorite or experiment with several. You'll also find special equipment like attribute-enhancing electronic implants, first aid kids, night vision and more. At the end of each mission and throughout the levels you can spend cash earned by killing aliens on new goodies for the next task.
Game Modes
The Campaign mode is a 15-mission, story-driven (sort of) trip through the M.A.G.M.A. headquarters. Each mission features multiple primary and secondary objectives, plus many hidden secrets and powerups. The other two game modes, Survival and Stand Firm, are both variations on how-long-can-you-last assaults by relentless, endless swarms of aliens. In Survival you can improve your weapons and skills; in Stand Firm, it's just you with a basic kit. Four difficulty levels add to the replayability.
Tip: Flash It
In many missions and sections, it's dark or completely black. Your trusty flashlight will illuminate a limited area in front of you, but check your six often to make sure there are no aliens sneaking up behind.
Tip: That's a Lot of Aliens
The 50+ different species of aliens that you get to shoot in Alien Shooter aren't very bright...but when they're coming at you in swarms of 1,000 or more, they don't need to be. Try to corral them into some sort of bottleneck so you don't get surrounded.
tip: Vehicular Xenoslaughter
Some of the missions offer heavy armored vehicles that are especially useful against huge swarms and individual boss monsters. You can take a lot more punishment in one of these, but you're not indestructible, so use them carefully.
