Basics

Art of Fighting 3 is a 2D fighting game along the lines of Street Fighter III. Ryo and Robert return in this new storyline featuring eight other original characters for them to beat until candy comes out. Master the unique super attacks and deadly karate combos of each fighter, including new special moves and techniques. This is the final installment of the AOF series and arrived when the 2D fighter craze was dying down -- but the technology and visuals are second to none.

Controls

The controls differ from earlier AOF games, so even veterans will need some practice. The new generation of 3D fighters was just appearing when AOF3 came along, and this game feels more like one of those. The four main controls -- punch, kick, hard attack and taunt -- match previous versions. But the similarities end there; you'll find that your character's movement has far more bearing on how attacks work.

Storyline

The arcade version of this game actually had no storyline, but they added some stuff for the Neo-Geo home system version. In this third installment, Ryo and his sister Yuri head south to track their buddy Robert down (he's in Mexico trying to find a missing friend who's gotten into trouble), and the trio gets involved in a plot that's equal parts weird science and pure evil. You can follow the story if you play as Robert or Ryo, but the other characters don't have storylines of their own.

Spirit Gauge

Just below each fighter's health bar is a second meter, called the Spirit Gauge. It's full when you start the fight, but each special move (not regular punches or kicks), super attack or combo that you pull off lowers it a little bit. The lower your Spirit Gauge is, the less damage these attacks do. If the gauge ever reaches zero, you'll be unable to perform special attacks at all. Your spirit energy slowly recharges over the course of a fight, so keep an eye on its position.

Tip: Triangulation

Some characters, such as Ryo, can perform "triangle jumps" -- a two or three-point leap in which they spring off walls or other obstacles.

Tip: Knockdowns

Knockdowns are more common in AOF3, and they're almost impossible to block. Every character has at least one knockdown attack, which you can use to get your opponent off his or her feet and buy some time to prepare your next move.

Tip: Personal Bubble

Some of the most devastating attacks require that you be up close and personal -- in some cases you need to be practically touching the other character. This opens you up to all kinds of pain, but allows you to pull of some really nasty throws and strikes.

Tip: Sticks and Stones

Taunting is more than just a satisfying way to irritate your opponent -- a successful taunt will lower their spirit gauge. Of course, taking time out of a fight to mock your opponent gives them the opportunity to slap you around.
