Basics

Aveyond 2 is similar to RPGs that appeared on game consoles in the nineties; this turn-based roleplaying game hearkens back to the days when 50+ hour storylines were commonplace. You are Ean, a young, naive elf thrust into danger: a magical snow has swept through his home, taking his best friend with it. To free her, Ean must undertake a perilous journey and face the Snow Queen herself!

Controls

The chief technical improvement that Aveyond 2 offers over its predecessor is the ability to control most game functions with the mouse: just left click to move Ean to that location, and left click at menu items to make selections. Alternatively, you can play with the classic keyboard controls, maneuvering Ean with the arrow keys and interacting with Enter or the Spacebar. Hit [Esc] to bring up the game menu, which is where you manage your party, inventory, quest log and more.

Navigation

Aveyond 2 is a top-down RPG, similar to Lunar or Secret of Mana. Most of the time, you view the world from a zoomed-in perspective, and are able to see what's going on only in Ean's immediate surroundings. When traveling long distances, though, the perspective zooms out, revealing a much larger world map dotted with landmarks. Move over any of these to zoom back in and reveal the region. In some cases, you'll need special transportation to attain otherwise unreachable areas.

Combat

It wouldn't be an old-school RPG without some turn-based combat, and Aveyond 2 doesn't disappoint. As with the original, enemies are visible on the landscape, so you can avoid them if you like. Once in combat, use the menu to attack, use a magical skill or item, or actively defend against the foe of your choice. Coordinate attacks with the rest of your party to deal with large groups of enemies, and don't forget to pick up their loot!

Party Management

Ean starts the journey alone, but it's not long before others join up. Members may come and go throughout the game, and there are quite a few to meet. Except for combat, your entire party is tucked inside one avatar onscreen. Visit the game menu and choose Party to set your active members. You can also equip items, review character information and set a party leader (the one on the map) from the game menu. If you've ever played a game like Lagoon or Soul Blazer, this is familiar territory.

Tip: The Magic Portal Express

You'll find caves with the Magic Portal Express near towns and other settled areas. Just pull the switch, make a donation, choose a destination, and you're there. While the Portal Express is useful to cut down on step-retracing, it's very expensive early in the game.

Tip: Don't Forget to Remember

You would be amazed how many veteran RPG players have realized, hours after they bought some killer new weapon or armor, that they failed to equip it. Owning something isn't enough -- you must choose the character who will use weapons and armor, and equip them appropriately through the game menu.

Tip: Fork in the Road

Signposts dot the landscape, telling you which directions lead to settlements or important landmarks. Ean is new to the Land of Man and doesn't know his way around at all, so check these if you get lost.

Tip: Nice Villager

In true old-school RPG style, villages are full of citizens who're more than happy to start a conversation with a complete stranger. Make a point to talk with everyone, as some have useful information. Also, remember that what villagers say will change when major game events take place.
