Basics
From Phantasy Star to Lunar to the early Final Fantasies, this is a game that will awaken many happy memories for fans of old-school RPGs from the days of the NES and SEGA Genesis. You will find over 50 hours to reminisce with in Aveyond, a turn-based roleplaying game set in a world of high fantasy. As Rhen, you must stop the evil Ahriman from seizing control. But first Rhen must discover the strength in herself, strength she never imagined she could have.
Controls
Aveyond is a huge game, with new encounters around every corner. You can control Rhen with a gamepad or with the keyboard. Like most menu driven RPGs, controls are simple: move around with the arrow keys and hit the Spacebar or Enter to interact. Use the Esc key to bring up the game menu, from which you can access party information, items, the quest log and other tools.
Combat
Rhen's adventure starts out pretty harmlessly, but very soon she's deep in trouble and facing dangers she never imagined. Combat is central in this game. Each combatant in your party gets to attack, defend, use magic or use an item during each turn of combat; the enemies can do the same. The trick to combat in Aveyond is to successfully coordinate the actions of your party members, so you play to each other's strengths. Seek out encounters in the wilderness to gain experience.
Party Management
Your quest begins alone, but Rhen soon gathers a whole host of interesting characters who'll travel with her for much of her journey. Use the Party selection in the game menu to manage party order and combat availability, and be sure to keep everyone's inventory organized and the right people equipped with the right weapons. Some party members, including Rhen, have access to magic spells that heal your friends or blast your enemies.
Tip: Mule Express
Use the Mule Express parked outside most populated areas to move from place to place quickly. It's not a cheap ride, but it cuts down on travel time.
Tip: The Best Offense
Don't ignore the "Defend" option in the combat menu. Telling one of your characters to defend will dramatically reduce their chances of being hit, and the damage they take if they are. This is an effective way to protect injured or fragile characters.
Tip: Avoidance
Normal monsters and wildlife are visible and move around the world of Aveyond just like your party does -- there are no surprise encounters. If you don't want to fight, just stay away from the creatures you see.
Tip: Nooks and Crannies
Watch for treasure chests in unusual or hard-to-reach places. Many of them contain things like healing items; others may hold very special unique artifacts!
