Basics
Battle Chess is chess with a twist! You control one side in a standard-rules game, but when pieces take one another, they engage in a knock-down, drag-out battle that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. This isn't actually a violent game so much as a goofy one, so it's fine for kids and is a great way to introduce this beloved game to players who haven't seen the beauty of the real thing. Plus, it's really satisfying to talk smack to your opponent when your pawn skewers his.
Controls
Control Battle Chess with your mouse. The interface is very simple -- just click a piece, then highlight and click the square you want it to go to. Use the pulldown menus at the top of the screen to set game options. You can play Battle Chess against the computer or a human opponent, taking turns at the controls. In addition to playing with all the hilariously violent animations on the 3D board, you also have the option to play regular, non-battle chess from a top-down, 2D perspective.
Editor
If you tire of the regular gameplay, Battle Chess includes the option to create and customize your own games using the Set Up Board function. Drag pieces to different starting positions, handicap a side by removing important units, change the number of pieces that a side gets -- it's all up to you when you design the game yourself. You can save your creations and play them against the computer or against a human opponent.
Tip: Playing Aggressively
During gameplay, type "distractionpiece" (without the quotes) and one of your bishops will create a diversion so that thugs can kidnap the enemy queen. No one likes greedy people, so don't try this more than once per game!
Tip: Difficulty
As it happens, the computer AI in Battle Chess isn't likely to defeat Garry Kasparov any time soon. An aggressive player can usually overwhelm it through sheer attrition. And hey, attrition is fun to watch.
Tip: Getting Help
If you need more information on how to play Battle Chess, click on the Battle Chess Help in the Help pulldown menu.
