Basics

Battle of Europe: Royal Air Force is a semi-realistic combat flight simulator that takes you into combat with the German Luftwaffe at the height of World War II. 16 missions with multiple objectives await you, along with more than a dozen flyable aircraft. This game is a good choice for newcomers to combat flight simulators. To begin a game, click Pilots in the main menu to add a profile for yourself, then click the Campaign button.

Tutorial

The first mission in Battle of Europe is a comprehensive tutorial that guides you through the basics of flying an airplane and shooting at enemies. Though you can skip this tutorial if you want, it's a useful course for beginners, and it introduces you to all the default keys and commands found in the game. Though far less complex than a game like IL-2 Sturmovik, Battle of Europe is dense enough that a tutorial is really helpful, if only to learn the keyboard commands.

Game Options

While you could theoretically play this game with just the mouse and keyboard, you really want a joystick or at least a gamepad if you hope to control it well. Be sure to select the controller type you're using in the Options screen. Here you can also remap keyboard commands and adjust visual and performance settings. Battle of Europe is a relatively new game, so if you have a lower-end computer it's a good idea to cut down on the eye candy a little bit, or it may run slowly.

Game Types

There are two basic play modes in Battle of Europe: the Campaign game, which is a linear, story-driven series of missions that progress toward a final showdown with the Luftwaffe; and single Missions, in which you can fly any of the missions found in the Campaign in any order you like. After you take the tutorial you should probably go right into the Campaign, since the early missions are still relatively simple, allowing you to get more comfortable with the controls.

Missions

Each of the 16 missions you'll fly in the Campaign game include multiple primary and secondary objectives. A detailed mission briefing that describes these objectives and the mission's historical context is provided. Primary objectives are required; completing secondary ones will unlock bonuses and powerups, but you don't have to finish them to complete the mission. In most missions you also have the opportunity to choose which aircraft you'll fly.

HUD

Battle of Europe has a simple interface that is described in detail during the tutorial. Radar, speedometer, altimeter and other instruments are always displayed as a cockpit overlay. If you prefer a more minimal HUD, you can switch from the classic interface to a digital readout (default key: I) -- less historically accurate but potentially easier to read. Learn to depend on your HUD for information, since flying by instruments is a very useful skill in the difficult final missions.

Tip: Landing Gear

Pull up your landing gear the second you're airborne (default key is "G"). Some planes are very unforgiving if you dawdle on this step, and bad things will happen if you try to fly with your landing gear deployed.

Tip: Bonuses

You receive bonuses for completing secondary and non-required mission objectives. These include tracking missiles, super bullets, health recovery and more. If you see a bonus, grab it before it disappears.

Tip: Campaign Game

It's always best to complete all your objectives in the Campaign game, but remember that your primary objectives are the most important. Leave the secondary ones for later.

Tip: Gallery

The Gallery option in the main menu leads to a nice picture gallery packed with information about the planes you'll be flying in Battle of Europe. Refer to the Gallery often, since in many missions you can choose your own aircraft, and understanding their capabilities helps.
