Getting Started
On the title screen, click "New Player Profile". Enter your name using the mouse or the keyboard and click the "Done" button. Then select the name of your profile on the title screen to start your game. The first time you start a game with a new profile, you will be prompted to log in to GameSpy if you have an account with that service, but the game is playable without doing so.
Gameplay Modes
The Single Player mode is the bulk of the game. The US Campaign will take you through the US involvement in World War II in the Pacific theater, but don't jump in just yet! Battlestations: Midway is complex, and you'll need to take the tutorial first. Multiplayer battles are carried out over the Internet (via the GameSpy network).
Tutorial
From the Single Player game screen, choose "Naval Academy" to go through boot camp. Your first mission is piloting a single ship, and further tutorials will cover assessing and repairing damage and commanding a fleet of ships. The last tutorials cover piloting of aircraft and command of submarines, too.
Single Missions
Get your feet wet with the Ship, Plane and Submarine Challenge options from the Single Player game screen. These are shorter, often simpler challenges than those in the US Campaign, allowing you to get the hang of piloting and commanding the craft you control. You only have one mission in each mode; once you clear that, others will be unlocked.
Tip: Take It Easy
Start with the tutorial, then get a few Challenges under your belt before you enter the US Campaign mode. You're expected to be fully prepared for battle by the time you play the Campaign, so get some practice first!
Tip: Battle Damage
This is war, and you're going to take damage from enemy fire no matter what kind of vehicle you're in, from a single fighter aircraft to a mighty battleship. Keep an eye on your damage and spread your repair crews appropriately, before a tiny leak turns into a major problem.
Tip: Awards
You will be rewarded medals for exceptional combat prowess. You can view these through the "Awards" menu on the title screen. The game is kind enough to tell you what you're expected to do for each medal, so you'll know where to practice to earn them all.
