Basics

BloodRayne is an adrenaline- and gore-soaked 3D action game in which you take control of Rayne: a curvaceous half-vampire (don't ask) with a serious attitude problem and more weaponry than a tank. Slice, punch, bite, kick and blast your way through a mystery involving -- but, impressively, not limited to -- Nazis, supernatural artifacts, disgusting plagues, Louisiana, Rayne's dad and mutated horrors from the beyond. Not for the weak of stomach or poor of reflex, but this game is awesome action.

Controls

Vampires these days come equipped with lots of fancy weapons and martial arts skill, so you can hardly expect to know the ropes at the beginning. Fortunately, Rayne's employer, the Brimstone Society, offers a convenient training course for young vampires that'll teach you all you need to know about movement, basic abilities, combat and snappy one-liners. Just choose New Game, then Training in the menu. There you'll meet to a lovely lady named Mynce who'll teach you everything you need to know.

Half-Vampire

Because she's only half vampire, Rayne is somewhat less limited than her purebred cousins. She doesn't sleep in a coffin, for example. Garlicky foods and crosses don't bother her. She avoids the sun mostly because she's kind of gothy. Getting submerged in water hurts -- which makes bathing a challenge -- but it won't kill her outright. She also has most of the innate talents of regular vampires, such as the ability to jump really high, restore health by feeding on blood, and much more.

Special Abilities

Jumping high and snacking on blood are just the beginning of Rayne's talents. Some are introduced in the training section, while others are unveiled as the game calls for them. Rayne can see the auras of those around her, can enter a frenzied bloodlust state where she's even more dangerous with those wrist blades than usual, even slow down time to dodge bullets. Whether you're playing with a mouse and keyboard or the gamepad, you can customize controls to suit your style.

Weapons

Strapping a pair of sixteen inch switchblades to the back of one's forearms may seem inherently dangerous, but there's a tradeoff -- one, it looks cool. Two, it's the best way to dice zombies, Nazis, zombie Nazis and anyone else Rayne encounters on her adventure. In addition to the wrist blades, Rayne will discover more than a dozen firearms that you can use to supplement your already pretty-impressive combat repertoire. You can't carry them all at the same time, so pick your favorites early.

Story

It would've been more subtle if they'd named it "The Institute for Meta-Reality Mitigation" or something, but the Brimstone Society isn't about subtle. They investigate paranormal events (usually really gross ones) and then send in their version of the Marines -- in this case, you. The Nazis are up to something (they always are), and Rayne needs to eliminate the conspiracy's leadership before ultimate power falls into Der Fuehrer's hands. How it all ties in with her past is for you to figure out.

Tip: Free Your Mind!

Rayne's ability to slow down time is called Dilated Perception -- basically she's such a cool half vampire that she sees stuff and reacts faster than loser Nazis could hope to. You can only use this in short bursts early on, but later you'll be able to unleash it for extended periods.

Tip: Ready for a Close-Up

This may go without saying, but the shotgun, particularly those of the double-barreled persuasion, is most effective at close range. Very close. Even tough enemies are reduced to red mist if you're able to belly right up to them and pull the trigger. At long range, you won't hit the broad side of a barn.

Tip: This Nutritious Breakfast

Human blood not only tastes scrumptious, it heals Rayne up when she's wounded. Moreover, you can employ standing victims as human shields so stray bullets do not interrupt your dining pleasure.

Tip: Cats Don't Like it, Either

Rayne can survive a short dip in the water, but her health bar plummets if she stays in too long. Many of the games more fearsome jumping puzzles take place over a lake of the stuff, so try to be precise.

Tip: High Anxiety

Rayne's ability to jump moderately-tall buildings in a single bound grants her access to rafters, rooftops, even high-tension wires. If you're unable to find an objective, check to see what's going on above you.
