Basics
Gameplay in Cannon Fodder is mission-based: every level has its own map and objectives, and only casualties carry over between missions. Each mission has you taking command of a handful of troops to kill enemy soldiers, destroy foes, rescue hostages or protect civilians. Are you up to the task, soldier?
Getting Started
Before each mission, you're given fifteen new recruits to work with in case the men in the field fall to the enemy. Press the start button from this screen to get your mission briefing, select Load to enter a password, or select Save to get the password to start at that stage later.
Controls
Controlling your troops is a snap. You have a cursor that you move around with the directional keys, a Move button, and a Fire button. Pressing the Move button gets your troops marching to where the cursor is. Pressing the Fire button unloads a barrage of machine gun fire in the direction of the cursor.
Weapons
Once you find grenades or bazooka ammunition, press Start to go to the menu and select them. Once you do, you can fire the special weapon you've got selected by holding down the Fire button and pressing the Move button. Buildings and vehicles can't be destroyed by machine guns, so make sure you have enough heavy explosives to get through a level if those tasks are part of your goal.
Tip: Traps
Watch out for land mines and other traps. They're often hard to spot, but will take out your soldiers without hesitation. If you suspect there's a minefield ahead, sweep the area with machine gun fire -- bullets will harmlessly detonate the mines.
Tip: A Door Able
Buildings aren't considered destroyed until the door falls off. If you've blown off the roof but the door is in place, give it another grenade or bazooka shot.
Tip: Swimming
When troops are swimming, they have to use both arms to keep afloat. That means they can't defend themselves! Make sure the area is clear of hostile forces before you take to the water.
