Use your joystick or directional pad to move around the bottom quarter of the screen and avoid getting hit. You're not forced to stay at the far bottom of the screen -- in fact, you'll often need to move up or down within your limited area. To shoot at enemy insects, press the fire button.
Your main foes are centipedes -- long creatures that scurry down from the top of the screen in a zigzag pattern. Each time you shoot one segment of a centipede, that segment disappears, but yields trouble: two centipede parts, now attacking independently.
In Centipede, mushrooms work like bumpers. When centipedes hit them, the creatures change direction as they head down the screen. There is, however, one exception to this rule: When centipedes touch poisonous white mushrooms, they immediately drop straight down to the bottom.
Centipedes aren't the only pests in your garden. There are scorpions, whose touch turns mushrooms poisonous; fleas that drop from the screen's top, leaving a trail of mushrooms in their wake; and spiders that bounce along the screen's bottom, occasionally chomping mushrooms. Kill 'em all.
If you want to score big, shoot for the bugs that scatter in and out of gameplay on an irregular schedule. While hitting a centipede segment is worth only 10 points (heads are worth 100 each), fleas net you 200 points each, scorpions give 1000 points each and spiders yield either 300, 600 or 900 points each (the closer it is when you kill it, the more points it's worth).
There are many strategies for earning high scores in Centipede. One of the most popular methods is to build a "corridor" along one edge of the screen by creating a line of mushrooms about one inch from that edge. Centipedes that enter the corridor will be sitting ducks as they zigzag back and forth down the narrow passage.
