Gameplay Modes

In every mode, your goals are the same: be the first to cross the finish line! In Championship mode, you play as Colin McRae himself, racing to win the championship cup. In Career mode, you create a driver and play through circuits in each country for prestige. Challenges mode allows you to practice your Time Attack scores by racing alone.

Controls

The game is controlled with the keyboard by default, but you may change the controls to whatever you like by going to Options from the main menu, then Controls, then choosing your player and desired controller and pushing Enter. By default, you steer with the left and right directional controls, and accelerate with the up directional control. Brake by pressing down. Apply the handbrake with the Space Bar. To make a hard steer, hold down the N key while you turn left or right.

Customization

Before each race, you're allowed to customize specific aspects of your automobile, from the tread on your tires to the responsiveness of your brakes to the gear ratios in your gearbox. Consider the terrain and weather on the race you're about to enter and change your vehicle to match accordingly.

Unlockables

You start with only a few vehicles and tracks available to you, but don't despair: there are many more to be unlocked by winning races and amassing driver points in Career Mode. The game will let you know which bonus materials you can unlock before you ever start the circuit, so there are no surprises.

Tip: Transmission

You're allowed to choose automatic, semi-automatic, or manual transmission for your vehicle in each race. Automatic transmission switches gears for you. Semi-automatic transmission switches gears for you, but you can force the vehicle to switch gears if you choose. Manual transmission will depend solely on you to switch gears -- use the V and B keys to shift up and down.

Tip: Damage

Watch out for trees, rocks, walls, and other racers! While a lot of work went into modeling all the damage your vehicle can take and the results certainly look realistic, damage to your vehicle will affect your handling, speed, acceleration, and other factors.
