Basics

Cuban Missile Crisis: The Aftermath is a strategy wargame that explores an alternate history -- one in which the blockade of Cuba failed and the U.S. and U.S.S.R. found themselves locked in nuclear war. After the missiles stop falling, factions pull together and struggle to rebuild, gobbling resources and territory. Part turn-based strategy, part real-time tactical simulation, your objective is to lead one of the four factions to victory in a bombed-out ruin of the world.

Training

Before you begin a faction campaign, check out the training missions under New Game in the main menu. The interface and play style for Cuban Missile Crisis is a little different from standard strategy games, since you're in command of a turn-based strategic side and a real-time tactical battle screen. The tutorial missions will guide you through the basics of unit control, army management, resources, territories and so forth. Then you'll be ready to choose a faction and begin the war.

Resources

After the mushroom clouds faded away, the world's nations were broken and resources are scarce. Those who remain must vie for what little is left, and control of strategically vital resources is the key to victory. Ammunition, fuel and spare parts are your gold in this game, because if you fall short on any of them, your ability to make war will be severely degraded. Use your armies to seize and hold resource depots, then milk them for supplies while denying your enemies access.

Strategic Map

About half of the game takes place in a turn-based interface on the strategic map. Here you and your opponents take turns maneuvering your armies, assaulting territories, snatching resources and managing your forces. Try to develop both long-term and short-term objectives while viewing the strategic map, and move your forces into position accordingly. You can also watch the enemy from this view, to better develop your strategies and prepare for unexpected assaults.

Battles

When opposing factions meet on the strategic map and during important missions, the game turns into a tactical real-time strategy battle. Here you issue specific orders to your units while bullets whiz by and shells explode around you. If you've used the strategic map properly and planned well, real time battles will give you the opportunity to decimate your foes and take their resources and territory as your own. Each battle is unique, and victory depends on your skill as a commander.

Factions

In the aftermath of the nuclear war, national boundaries have changed significantly and the world's superpowers find themselves severely weakened. The U.S.S.R. remains intact; the Americans have joined the British to form the Anglo-American Alliance; France and Germany merge into the Franco-German Alliance, and China has appeared from the east to capitalize on the war. Each faction has its own storyline and victory conditions, and you must win them all to achieve total victory.

Tip: Autobattle

You don't have to switch to real time strategy mode for every battle -- the Autobattle feature will sort out a conflict and announce the results. This is useful if your force is overwhelmingly superior, or if you don't feel like micromanaging the combat.

Tip: Resource Management

The resources in Cuban Missile Crisis are directly tied to the performance and operation of your army, so be judicious in deployment. Tanks that roll all over the place burn fuel; troops that shoot at every movement waste ammo. Manage your resources carefully!

Tip: Veteran Units

Your units and troops improve over time, as soldiers who've seen a lot of combat become better soldiers. Veteran troops and armor can make the difference between victory and defeat in a pitched battle.

Tip: Pausing

You can pause the game and issue orders when you're in the real-time tactical mode. Use this to issue complex commands or micromanage ammunition use, troop stance and other tactics.

Tip: Supply Vehicles

You can supply fuel and ammo to your troops and armor during battles with the aid of supply trucks, but be careful: these vehicles are defenseless and quite vulnerable. Losing one can be more damaging than losing a tank.
