Basics

A gothic horror adventure set in 14th-century Britain, Daemonica's mystery features elements of puzzles, action and roleplaying. You are Nicholas Farepoynte, whose skill in speaking with the unquiet dead has made him a useful -- if often unwelcome -- solver of murders. Months after the Black Death has devastated Europe, you are summoned to gloomy Cavorn to investigate a brutal murder. But the truth is hidden behind layers of small-town suspicion, and the obvious answers are rarely right.

Controls

Though it's primarily a point-and-click adventure game, Daemonica controls more like Baldur's Gate or Diablo. Move Nicholas by clicking where you want him to go, and activate things in the game world with another click. Rotate the camera using the arrow keys, and zoom in or out with the mouse wheel. The mouse pointer changes to reflect appropriate actions for what you're pointing at. Refer to the Controls section of the Options menu for a detailed explanation of mouse and keyboard commands.

Potion Making

One of Nicholas's key skills is his ability to formulate potions from herbs you'll find growing around Cavorn. There are a finite number of plants (they regrow between acts of the story), so brew carefully. The most important potion in your store is Soulgreep, a noxious, nearly-deadly concoction that transports Nicholas to the realm between life and death, where he can communicate with demons and spirits of the dead, quizzing them for information to help solve the mystery.

Residents of Cavorn

Daemonica is a dialogue-intensive game, and you'll need to talk with everyone if you hope to gather the necessary clues. Unfortunately, the people of Cavorn are suspicious of newcomers, especially creepy tattooed ones like Nicholas, who must keep his unique powers a secret or risk being burned as a witch. You must work to earn the trust of the people, often by helping them with their own tasks, before you can get at the information you seek. Your journal will track the conversations you have.

Combat

In another departure from traditional point-and-click adventures, Daemonica includes a handful of brief, fairly simple real-time combat sequences. Nicholas comes equipped with a sword, which you can use to hack at your enemies by left-clicking on them. Parry incoming blows by holding the spacebar during combat. How much combat you wind up in mainly depends on your behavior; Nicholas can talk his way out of most confrontations if you choose, but rudeness can often initiate a fight.

Tip: Bring Out Your Dead

When Nicholas drinks Soulgreep and visits the spirit realm, it's not as easy as hollering "Hey! Ghost! Who killed you?" Spirits of the dead will not meet with you at all unless you know a good deal about them, including their astrological sign and the basics of their personality. Some ghosts and demons will kill you out of hand if your knowledge is faulty, so do your research.

Tip: Keep it Secret

You'll need to go to some lengths to conceal Nicholas's talents of the demon-speaking variety from the people of Cavorn. Especially at the beginning of the game, you are viewed with hostility and suspicion...the Black Death's ravages are fresh in people's minds, and newcomers to town are never trusted. Don't do anything particularly demonic within sight of the villagers.

Tip: Big Surprise There

It should come as no shock that the Mayor of Cavorn hanged an innocent man; but proving it is another story. Start by looking into other recent deaths and see if you can establish a pattern.
