Basics

Daikatana is an action-packed shooter that combines huge levels, high-adrenaline combat and a journey through the far reaches of human history. You're Hiro Miyamoto, an unassuming martial arts teacher in 25th Century Japan. Dragged into a conflict between the mighty Mishima Corporation and its foes, Hiro's only hope is the Daikatana, a mystical sword forged by his ancestors. This weapon gives its wielder power over time, and only in the past will Hiro find the tools he needs to combat Mishima.

Controls

The controls for Daikatana are easy to learn, and can be customized through the Mouse and Keyboard menus in the main interface. They generally match the control systems of most first person shooter games. Control Hiro's movement using the WASD keys and the mouse. Click the left mouse button to attack, and interact with objects in the world with the right button. Other keyboard controls allow you to jump and crouch, use items in your inventory and issue orders to Hiro's two companions.

Backstory

16th Century Japan languished in the grip of the evil Mishima Shogunate. The Ebihara clan stood against them, but neither side could prevail until Usagi Miyamoto, Hiro's ancestor, forged the magical Daikatana, which the Ebihara used to destroy the Shogunate. Nearly a thousand years later, the sword with power over time has resurfaced, and Kage Mishiman has used it to alter history, giving his family ultimate power once more. Only Hiro and a few other brave warriors stand against this evil.

Hiro's Companions

Hiro begins alone, but he's not that way for long. His first companion is Mikiko Ebihara, beautiful and deadly, a descendant of the clan that once destroyed Mishima. Next comes Superfly Johnson, once an employee of the Mishima conglomerate, now turned rogue and committed to undoing the evils he has seen the corporation commit. These two companions are fight beside Hiro, controlled by their own AI. You can issue orders and guide their behavior, but be careful -- if either dies, the game is over!

Skills

Encounters with various enemies, successful completion of levels and advancement through the game earns experience points you can use to improve Hiro's five skills and customize your warrior. Power determines the strength of your weapon, Attack improves your rate of fire, Speed improves your movement rate, Acro allows you to jump higher and Vitality increases your maximum health. Choose your expenditures carefully, and watch for powerups that temporarily boost these stats.

The Daikatana

Forged by Hiro's distant ancestor, the Daikatana is the most powerful sword ever created, imbued with a magic capable of bending time itself. Kage Mishima used it to alter the past, setting himself up as the leader of a huge corporation with a stranglehold on necessary vaccines. Hiro and his friends must use it to set the timeline right. The Daikatana is devastating in combat as well, growing ever more powerful -- like Hiro himself -- as it defeats enemies on the path to your goal.

Tip: Obey Me

Learning the art of commanding Superfly and Mikiko is crucial to success. You have access to basic commands -- come here, go away, hang back, grab that, etc. -- and you should customize the keyboard so you're comfortable with their position. Both companions will act on their own, but not always the way you want them to.

Tip: They Really Are Forever

You can't just save whenever you want in Daikatana -- instead, you have to find Save Gems scattered throughout the different levels. You can carry a maximum of three, and burn one whenever you save (the game is also saved between levels). Gems are often cunningly hidden, so search carefully.

Tip: Inventoria

Along with the Daikatana and other weapons, there's a wide selection of armor and other items scattered around most levels. As you collect them, they're added to the inventory menu above Superfly's information. Select items and press the Use key to activate them.

Tip: Stayin' Alive

Remember that if you lose one of your companions, the game is automatically over -- and both Mikiko and Superfly are depressingly eager to put themselves in danger. In addition to keeping them safe from attackers, watch for environmental dangers like lava and crushing doors.

Tip: So Secretive

Daikatana's immense levels are packed with secret passageways that lead to special treasures, unique items and weapon powerups that will help you make it through this challenging game. If any part of the environment looks out of place, explore the region carefully.
