Getting Started
You'll be presented with several options at the title screen. Click Missions to attempt a single mission, Campaign to start a series of missions, or Quick Mission for a shorter game. Once you've made your choice, you'll advance to the preparation screen. Click one of the missions on the left side of the screen, then click the drop-down boxes to select your ship, difficulty, and mission type. Finally, click OK twice to start the selected mission.
Navigation View
You will begin the game in the navigation view. This is where you will plot your course, adjust your ship's performance settings, and view its immediate surroundings. The bottom right of the screen lists the ship's current speed, depth, and course. Move the cursor over the digits shown next to these settings and click the left mouse button to increase them, or the right mouse button to decrease them.
Map Markers
While on the navigation screen, you can mark specific areas of the map with the mouse. Right click on any part of the map and a small drop-down menu will appear. Select Drawing Tools from the list, then click Add Mark and click on the map to set a mark there. You can also hide the marks you previously set and access the game menu by right clicking on the map, then clicking the appropriate options from the menu that appears.
Control Panel
Press the F1 key to access your ship's control panel. The Control Panel lets you control your ship more precisely and access functions unavailable in the navigation view. Click inside each gauge to adjust it, and click on the buttons to activate them.
Views
Press the F2 key to check your sonar. Sonar uses sound waves to detect solid objects, including enemy submarines. Press the F3 key to access your radar, another detection method that uses electromagnetic waves. Press the F4 key to check your radio for important messages. Press F6 to view your arsenal of weapons, and F8 to view objects through your periscope. When you're finished, press F5 to return to the navigation view.
Torpedoes
You can access the rear view of the ship by tapping the F9 key. While in the rear view mode, you can fire torpedoes at targets by first clicking the crosshair icon on the bottom right corner of the screen, then clicking the right mouse button when a target is within the weapon scope. The number of torpedoes remaining is shown on the bottom right corner of the screen. You have a limited supply, so use them sparingly!
Saving
When your ship is attacked by enemies or crashes into solid objects, it will sustain damage, and lose important functions such as radar and sonar. If your ship takes too much damage, it will plunge to the bottom of the ocean, and you will be required to start the current mission from the beginning. The threats in each mission, coupled with their size, makes it important to save your progress regularly. Press the Escape key and click Save Game to record your progress.
Tip: In Over Your Head
Dangerous Waters is an extremely complex game, bursting at the seams with detail. That's why it's important to start out slowly, playing the Quick Missions and getting a feel for the game before committing yourself to the lengthy Campaign mode.
Tip: What's That Sound?
You can take advantage of your ship's sonar even when you're not in the sonar view. When you hear “ping” sounds, quickly press F2 to search for enemies in the surrounding area.
