Basics

Descent III begins just moments after Descent II ended. Material Defender has been badly damaged and the PTMC wants you dead. You must battle through a horde of defense bots and sentries to reach those trying to kill you. The first time you play, the game will run a short setup routine to configure your graphics -- just follow its instructions. Then click the "Play" button to begin and enter your pilot's name. Choose “New Game” and select Descent III: Retribution to begin the main story.

Controls

You can play Descent III using the keyboard, mouse, and/or joystick, and customize your controls in the Options section of the main menu. Once you're in the game, the interface is very simple: the left number is your energy, which powers your beam weapons. The right number is your shields, which protect you from damage. Both can be powered up with items dropped by enemies or left laying around. Keep an eye on these two numbers, because if either reaches zero, you're in serious trouble.

Missions

This game isn't about clearing infested mines -- you'll have multiple, varied objectives on each mission you fly. A detailed mission briefing is provided, along with photography of any mission objectives. Pay attention to the briefings, as these levels are huge. Also listen to the radio chatter from friendlies, as they can alert you to danger or point you in the right direction. Marvin the GuideBot will lead you to your next mission objective and come back to get you if you get lost.

Weapons

You have access to three new craft in Descent III (plus a bonus craft from Mercenary). Each has its own benefits and drawbacks in speed, shields, armament and so forth. As you play the game you'll pick your favorites for each mission type. All the craft start with a basic laser and complement of missiles, but you'll add more powerful ordnance as you go through the missions. Enemies all have their own unique vulnerabilities, so experiment with the weapons to find your favorites.

Gameplay Modes

Descent III: Mercenary is the expansion pack to the original Descent III and is included in this game. It offers seven huge new single-player missions that wrap up the story of Descent III. There's also a new type of ship to fly. It's best to finish Descent III before starting Mercenary, just so you can follow the story. To begin playing Mercenary, select Descent III: Mercenary from the New Game menu. The other game types are there for training, exploration and mastering your pilot skills.

Tip: Chaff

Chaff is one of your countermeasures, and very useful to confuse and disorient homing weapons. If something locks onto you, drop some chaff fast!

Tip: Flares

You can launch flares to brighten up very dark spaces. Unlike the flares of the previous Descent games, these cost no energy to fire.

Tip: Map

These missions are big, and the underground ones especially can get confusing even with Marvin's help. Refer to a rotatable 3D map of the region (default Tab) if you're not sure where to go next. Stuff you haven't seen (and Marvin hasn't scouted) isn't on the map, so explore as much as you can.
