Basics
Descent II takes place just minutes after the original Descent ended. Having defeated the infected mine robots, you just want a paycheck and a rest -- but a loophole in your contract with the Post-Terran Mineral Corporation locks you into another battle in 30 new interstellar mines. You must race through the tunnels, blasting enemies and collecting powerups, then at the end of each mine, you must battle the supercomputer that controls the robots and get out before the whole place blows up.
Controls
The controls for Descent II are very similar to those in Descent. You can use a combination of keyboard, mouse and joystick for control and firing. Some controls can be adjusted in the game options menu. During play, watch the two numbers at the bottom center of the screen. The orange one is energy, which powers beam weapons. The blue one is shields, which keep you safe from harm. Both can be replenished with powerups collected from defeated enemies or hidden in the levels.
Enemies
While you were fighting with PTMC over your contract, some engineers refit Material Defender with swanky new technology. Additional weapons are available to complement old favorites. You'll also pick up some new missile types deep in the mines. That's important, because the enemies have also been given an improved AI and they're even more deadly than before. Pick up every weapon you can find -- you'll need them against the horde of deranged mining bots, each of which has its own vulnerabilities.
Mine Cores
At the heart of each mine lies a huge supercomputer that controls operations. The alien virus has infected these too, which is why they're turning normally harmless mining bots into bloodthirsty terror droids. Destroying a mine core will set off a chain reaction that blows up the whole mine, so be ready to exit quickly after your battle. These computers are huge and well-defended, often requiring a lot of firepower to destroy. Some of Material Defender's new weapons tech should help with that.
Tip: GuideBot
The friendly GuideBot is a scout-recon addition to Material Defender. It roams the tunnels ahead, leading you to important areas. If you get lost, it will even come back to find you. GuideBot makes the mines much easier to navigate.
Tip: ThiefBot
The dreaded ThiefBot is one of Descent II's most wicked new enemies. It will sneak up on you and slurp away energy or steal crucial powerups while you wheel around trying to get it in your sights. If you see one of these, drop what you're doing and blast it!
Tip: Headlights
It gets awfully dark down there in the mines. Luckily, in addition to flares (default: F), you now have headlights you can turn on (Default: H) to illuminate gloomy spots. Both drain energy, so use them sparingly.
